Terryland Castle
Blake-Forster records a tradition relating to the castle of Tiroilein, or Tirellan (now called Terryland):
De Burghs and O Flaherty’s
Terryland Castle was built in the 17th century on the banks of the river Corrib close to Galway town, to protect a river crossing here. The O’Flaherty’s owned the Castle and it was taken from them by the De Burghs. There was a feud between the De burghs and the O’Flaherty’s. The De burghs had to surrender the castle and the De Burghs ordered O’Flaherty to supply them with cattle, corn and wool forever. The O’Flaherty’s refused to pay and De Burgh sent his son to demand payment but young De Burgh was beheaded by O Flaherty’s. The Feud carried on until De Burgh had to move to a new castle. He spent only one night in his new home, which received the name of Castlegar, and removed to Portumna, which became his principal residence. Tirellan was burned to the ground by the Irish garrison during the siege of Galway.
