Ruxton was one of eight children of William Ruxton and Caroline Diana Vernon. Her siblings were John Fitzherbert Vernon, Charles Harcourt Vernon, Florence Elizabeth, Georgina Anna, Caroline Lydia and Helen Vernon.[1][2] Her brother John died at the age of 28 in Massachusetts on June 1st 1892.[3]
Her father, William Ruxton held the office of High Sheriff for Co. Cavan in 1847 and also held office of justice of the peace for the county[4] as well as later holding the office of justice of the peace for Co. Louth.[4]
In 1886, at 23 years old, she married a Royal Navy commander Arthur Hill Ommaney Peter (born in 1950, in Sussex) in Pembroke, Pembrokeshire. This was his second marriage as he was previously been married in 1886. Together they had two of their own children. Arthur Noel Vernon (born in 1892) and Sybil Geraldine (born in 1897) However she also raised Hill-Lowe's daughter Ada (born in 1891) who was from his previous marriage who’s mother died during childbirth. The family lived in their residence at Court of Hill, Shropshire.[2]
On April 17th 1910, her husband, Arthur Hill died at the age of 60 in Shropshire, only two years after she won a bronze medal for Britain at the London Olympics in 1908.[1] [4]After Arthur’s death, she remarried to Lieutenant Roland Wycliffe Thompson on 29th June 1911. They went on their honeymoon to Ballyshannon, Co.Donegal. They lived together in Pembrokeshire but had no children together during the course of their marriage.[1] Thompson came from a long line of distinguished army officers and he was later made a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order for his duty in Cape Town during 1901 and 1902.[5][2]
Her son Vernon was an agricultural student in 1911 and served as a 2nd lieutenant in the North Irish Horse on April 18th 1915 following the outbreak of World War 2. He remained in the ranks for many years until he was made captain on April 6th 1918. He died in Buckinghamshire in 1964.[6]
Vernon’s son Lieutenant Arthur Norman Ommanney Peter Hill- Lowe (born in 1920) died on Wednesday 3rd of February 1943 when their train which departed from Aleppo and was en- route to Pererat was involved in a collision in which 27 soldiers and 3 officers of the Royal Dragoon were killed[6]. He was buried the British War Cemetery in Aleppo. [7][8]
