The Student Room (also known as TSR)[1][2] is commonly referred to as the UK’s largest online student community[3][4][5][6] or forum.[7][8]
The Student Room helps students support each other through their education, including when making choices about university.[9] It is typically used by students aged between 14 and 24,[10] or from GCSE to Postgraduate. The Student Room is also well known for its support for Mature Students.[11][12]
The Student Room’s discussions range across a wide range of topics from study help, universities, to careers, and a number of life-around-learning sections.[13] The site contains an informative Student Finance Zone with specialist information and regular surgeries hosted by Student Finance England experts.[14]
The Student Room community is run by specialist volunteer and staff teams whose aims are to support its online student community, keep them safe, and provide them with high-quality advice. These range from professional, employed Community Staff, to a number of different volunteer teams run by Volunteer Section Leaders, including Personal Statement Helpers and UCAS-trained, Clearing and Application Advisors. There are also official representatives, who may be from universities, or experts from charities, exam boards, or paid partners.[15]
Education sector involvement
[edit]The Student Room has worked closely with many UK education sector institutions over the years. For example Student Finance England partners with The Student Room to provide financial information particularly around the subject of student loans to students, prospective students, and parents on The Student Room.[16][17] Student Finance England is a partnership between the Student Loans Company and the Department for Education to provide financial support to students on behalf of the UK Government.[18]
The Student Room’s volunteer Clearing & Application Advisors are trained by UCAS (the UK’s official undergraduate admission service).[19] UCAS recommends students to The Student Room, for instance, to meet students before starting university.[20] UCAS 2022 Clearing Summary shows how both The Student Room and Which? University (now The Uni Guide owned by The Student Room) are top sources for students looking for a place in Clearing.[21]
The Higher Education Liaison Officers Association has a Strategic Partnership with The Student Room. HELOA is the professional association of staff in higher education who work in student recruitment, outreach, marketing and admissions.[22][23]
The Student Room works with UK university marketing teams and provides them with student insight, engagement and brand building products.[24] Many UK universities have official student representatives answering questions on TSR.[25][26][27] The University of Law has had a law and business partnership with The Student Room for many years.[28]
Exam boards often collaborate with The Student Room to support students. TSR partners with AQA to offer exam and revision tips,[29] while WJEC recommends TSR as a resource for alleviating exam stress.[30] Additionally, TSR has provided student questions to OCR, for OCR to respond to in their informative video resources for students.[31] The Student Room is also represented on the Strategic Advisory Board of Oxford Cambridge and RSA (OCR).[32]
UK secondary schools and sixth form colleges signpost The Student Room’s resources to their students.[33][34]
History
[edit]The Student Room website launched under the name "UK Learning" to offer an online space for students to collaborate, share revision resources, and discuss university applications.[35] In 2004, it was rebranded as The Student Room.[36]
The company (also known as The Student Room, and registered as The Student Room Group Ltd[37]) was founded in 2001 by Charles Delingpole, who was a student at the University of Cambridge at the time.[38]
In 2016, Mary Curnock Cook OBE, the former Chief Executive of UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service), joined The Student Room Group Board as a Non-Executive Director.[39] At that time, Mary Curnock Cook was also on the Board of the Open University and the Student Loans Company and is now also a member of the University of Leicester Council.[40]
In 2020, The Student Room Group acquired the Which? University website, a site dedicated to helping prospective university students making informed decisions about higher education. TSR took ownership of this site from the UK consumer advocacy group Which? Following the acquisition it was rebranded as The Uni Guide.[41]
Politics and government
[edit]The Student Room hosted a forum on apprenticeships and traineeships on behalf of the UK Parliament’s House of Commons Education Select Committee.[42] Nicola Dandridge, the former Chief Executive of the Office for Students, drew attention to The Student Room’s research in evidence given to the House of Lords Select Committee on Economic Affairs.[43]
Department for Education research in 2017 stated that The Student Room was “the most popular [online] source” for learners making HE decisions.[44] The Department for Education continues to recommend useful resources on TSR in its Education Hub site for students, parents and teachers.[45] The UK regulator for exams and qualifications, Ofqual, recommends TSR as source for students to help manage worries about exam and revision stress.[46] The Education and Skills Funding Agency recently partnered with TSR to inform students about it’s Skills for Life campaign.[47]
In 2016 Education Secretary Justine Greening answered students’ questions on The Student Room.[48] Nick Clegg, Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Caroline Lucas answered questions from students on The Student Room in the 2010 UK General Election campaign.[49] Lord Browne took part in a live Q&A on The Student Room as part of The Browne Review on UK student finance.[50]
Charity & campaigning
[edit]TSR has worked closely with a range of mental health organisations including the ‘NHS approved’ Good Thinking,[51] and mental health charities Papyrus[52] and Student Minds.[53]
TSR published research in partnership with Revolt Sexual Assault, a national campaign against sexual violence in UK universities.[54]
Academic and press coverage
[edit]The Student Room has been written about in academic journal articles including “Bullying amongst university students in the UK” in the International Journal of Emotional Education,[55] a PhD thesis on “The role of symbolic capital in digital inequality: lessons from 'The Student Room's' reputation system”;[56] and a journal article in Brain & Behavior on “Perceived cognitive performance in off-prescription users of modafinil and methylphenidate: an online survey”.[57]
The Student Room is frequently written about in UK education sector press, for instance articles in the Times Higher Education on how to survive A-Level Results day[58] and on why graduation ceremonies have to be so boring.[59] It has also been covered by the TES on supporting A Level students who miss their grades[60] and on responses to the Tory MP Robert Halfon’s call to scrap GCSEs[61]. The Student Room has also been covered in FE News in articles around neurodivergent friendly universities[62] and mental health support in universities.[63] TSR has been regularly quoted on Wonkhe, the blog by the UK organisation for higher education policy wonks.[64][65] TSR is also repeatedly mentioned on the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) blogs and comments.[66][67]
The Student Room also receives some attention in the national press, for instance articles in the Daily Mirror about students selling themselves for sex to pay their way through university;[68] and about sexual abuse at university in both The Independent[69] and Daily Mirror[70] It has also been quoted in an article about Gen Z email etiquette in The Guardian.[71]
Statistics
[edit]The Student Room currently receives over 6M visits per month on www.thestudentroom.co.uk website[72] and over 400,000 visits per month on www.theuniguide.co.uk.[73]
TSR has received over 75M posts, in 5M threads from over 5M members.[74]
