Thea Taylor, known professionally as carolesdaughter, is an American singer-songwriter. She first gained attention in late 2020 with the release of her song "violent," which quickly became popular on the social media app TikTok and amassed over 20 million streams across all platforms. The song was subsequently released by the Sony Music Entertainment subsidiary Arista Records.[1]
Taylor has also become well known due to her distinct look. She can usually be seen with a studded bracelet and a spiked necklace, emulating the punk fashion look from the 1980s.[2]
Early Life
[edit]Thea Taylor was born on Oceanside, California. She is the youngest of ten kids, with the family practicing a strict Mormon lifestyle. Taylor dropped in and out of school throughout her education and spent a large portion of her middle school career being homeschooled. After attending five different high schools, Taylor dropped out and attended rehab for her heavy use of drugs. During this six month period in rehab, Taylor spent the majority of her time writing songs, telling herself that she would "record and release music when [she] got home."[2][3]

[edit]2020 - present: violent
[edit]After being released from rehab in 2020, Taylor started releasing music onto the platform SoundCloud. Taylor released "wish i wuz dead" [sic] and "cold bathroom floor", among others. These first releases were written while Taylor was in rehab and mainly focused on Taylor's past relationships. From there, she released a slew of other songs, all of which with very distinct styles and types of instruments.[4]
In April of 2020, Taylor wrote and recorded the song "violent", but struggled to release it due to copyright complications. On November 23, 2020, Taylor rereleased "violent" with the help of Arista Records, quickly racking up over 2 million streams on SoundCloud. The song focuses on a past abusive relationship, incorporating a lofi beat Taylor found on YouTube. Taylor stated that she "was in a toxic relationship when she wrote it."[3] The song follows in the footsteps of one of her main influences Lil Peep, who also launched his career through SoundCloud. This type of music has been described as Emo rap, which tends to be slower and discuss more difficult issues, such as abuse or mental health.[1]
On January 14, 2021, Taylor released the music video for "violent", directed by Zachary Greaton and produced by The Perfect Subject.
