Introduction
[edit]The Yoshi Cup is a fictious trophy created by the members of the subreddit r/Aleague. The current holders of the Yoshi Cup are Western Sydney Wanderers FC who beat Sydney FC in the Sydney Derby (A-League) on the 18th of February, 2017, where they beat the home side 1-0 at ANZ Stadium.
Naming Origins
[edit]The Hyundai A-League produced a marketing campaign at the start of the 2016–17 A-League season, depicting a young asian boy who currently does not support a team in the Hyundai A-League and in order to show him what team to support, teams were encouraged to engage in activities with the child. After the series of short videos finished, Yoshi was left to pick a club to support. His decision was initially to support league heavyweights Melbourne City FC as they had superstar Socceroo Tim Cahill as their marquee signing, as well as a host of other big names. His decision was met with backlash by supporters of A League clubs, whilst the supporters of Melbourne City FC crowned themselves the champions of the inaugural Yoshi Cup. The Yoshi Cup unlike most competitions, is not played on a specific date. It is rather a prestigious mental award given to those who defeat the current owners of the trophy. Due to this convention, when Brisbane Roar FC upset Melbourne City FC at Lang Park, the competition for the award grew.

International Speculation
[edit]It is not yet clear yet as to whether or not overseas foreign teams can take the trophy of an A-League side and bring it back to their home nation if they were to defeat a side in an international club competition such as the Asian Champions League. It is also widely debated whether the only clubs from foreign nations that can take the Yoshi Cup are those such as Real Madrid C.F., Manchester United F.C. and Bayern Munich. This theory is believed to be proven by the fact that Yoshi tends to "glory hunt" in order to achieve personal satisfaction from the team he supports.
