Ex-Chelsea star Kalou, 28, has a buy-out fee in his Lille contract of just £2.5m.

He has impressed in France, scoring 22 times and contributing nine assists since joining Lille in the summer of 2012.

His last appearance for the Blues in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich.

Arsenal’s north London rivals, Tottenham, are also considering a move for the Ivory Coast star, along with Liverpool.

Arsene Wenger’s first choice though remains German Draxler, who he has bid £24.7m for.

Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta is praying Arsenal’s growing injury list will not derail their title quest.

The Gunners face a daunting fixture list in February with crunch clashes against Manchester United and Liverpool in the Premier League.

Brendan Rodgers also takes his in-form Liverpool to the Emirates in the FA Cup before European champions Bayern Munich arrive in the Champions League.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is already without Theo Walcott, but confirmed after Tuesday’s 2-2 draw at Southampton that Aaron Ramsey suffered a setback in his recovery from a thigh injury.

Influential midfielder Mathieu Flamini will join him on the sidelines after seeing red for a two-footed lunge on Morgan Schneiderlin.

Arteta said: “We have many options but that’s one problem we’ve had in recent weeks.

“We’ve had many injuries, we’ve lost Theo for a long time, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is just coming back - too many.

“Rosicky is out for a few weeks with a nose problem. We are a bit short at the moment but hopefully we can get people back.

“Every squad has to deal with these situations and of course we have to cope with these injuries. The schedule now is going to be really busy.

“We have some really tough games coming up in the next two weeks and we have deal with it and do our best.”

Arsenal lost the chance to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League when Adam Lallana rescued a deserved point in a 2-2 draw.

But despite Saints dominating for large parts of the game Arteta insists it is still two points dropped in the race for the Premier League crown.

The Spaniard added: “After the first-half probably we would have taken the draw. But after going 2-1 up away from home you are not happy with a point.

“There is a long way to go. Everyone is going to drop points and some teams will drop points here because it’s a tough place to come and hopefully we will be fine.

“It was a very hard match, credit to Southampton, they are a very good side. They pressed us from the start and made it very hard for us.”
