British Overseas Territories (Tariff free access) agreement
[edit]There will be Nineteen British Overseas Territories in a market access agreement with the UK & Crown Dependencies Customs Union. This agreement will allow goods to be traded tariff free between the UK, Overseas Territories listed below and the Crown Dependencies.
History
[edit]On December 16, 2020, a proposal was release by the UK government, this was later ratified into law as a statutory instrument The Customs (Tariff-free Access for Goods from British Overseas Territories) (EU Exit) Regulations 2020 but did not bring the sections of the regulation into effect.
On December 23, 2020, the government passed The Customs and Tariff (Appointed Day) (EU Exit) Regulations 2020 which set in law IP day as the day that all sections of The Customs (Tariff-free Access for Goods from British Overseas Territories) (EU Exit) Regulations 2020 will come into effect.[2]
On December 29, 2020, at 11:00pm, all parts of the Customs (Tariff-free Access for Goods from British Overseas Territories) (EU Exit) Regulations 2020 came into effect. [3]
Purpose of the agreement
[edit]The agreement:
- Removes customs duties between the UK overseas territories and the UK - Crown Dependencies Territories customs union.
- Prohibits discrimination
- Prohibits protectionist measures
- Allows for the free movement of goods, services & capital
