Powerful Typhoon Kristine

The typhoon Kristine had wreaked havoc in the Philippines because it was spurred by a low-pressure area that rapidly intensified into a tropical depression with releases of millions of distressed Filipinos on class suspensions, evacuation orders, and casualties.

The typhoon began as a trough of an LPA on 20 October 2024. This presented overcast weather conditions with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms in various places. On 21 October, the depression already intensified into a tropical depression and was named Kristine by PAGASA. It intensified very rapidly while moving west, which spelled much increased rainfall throughout the eastern Philippines as well as the chances for flooding and landslides.

The most destructive phase occurred on 23 October when it landed in Divilacan, Isabela. Passage through Isabela, Ifugao, Mountain Province, and Ilocos Sur was characterized by massive flooding, landslides, and structural damage. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council noted that there were heavy casualties, with more than one million families whose lives were affected by Kristine's deadly rampage.

However, Typhoon Kristine remained very much a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities of the Philippines to tropical cyclones, particularly in its peak months for typhoons. A storm like this often left regional departments inadequately prepared to cope with its aftermath despite early warnings and preparations. Authorities appealed for better early evacuations and enhanced infrastructure that would help the country withstand the increasing intensification of typhoons.
