Plant editathon, Moore Library 15 March 2018
[edit]This event hosted from 6 pm to 8 pm by the Betty and Gordon Moore Library is part of the Cambridge Science Festival. You do not need to sign up in advance, but please bring a computer. It is helpful if you create a Wikipedia account in advance.
Add {{plant editathon}} to your user page to take part. If you want to participate remotely: we'll find out! For some basic instructional material add {{new user bar}} also.
The event will consist of three activities, centred on Wikimedia coverage of plants and pollination:
Wikipedia articles
[edit]Improve the following articles in the area of pollination, and possibly create new ones. Add and revise text, add images.
Category:Plants and pollinators has plenty to look at.
Article name | Comment |
---|---|
List of crop plants pollinated by bees | Looks like a good starting point. |
pollinator | {{refimprove}} |
pollinator garden | {{globalize}}, In the UK DEFRA has an initiative. |
pollination network | Image found |
pollinator decline | Image found |
pollination trap | |
pollination syndrome | This article seems to be in good shape. Summary style (WP:SUMMARY) indicates the creation of articles for individual sections. Currently ornithophily exists. |
cactus pollination | See cactus. This topic seems to be particularly attractive. |
Wikidata information added
[edit]Add statements on Wikidata, for properties d:Property:P1703 and d:Property:P1704. The following are pollination databases (a more accurate term is "pollinator database"):
Database | Comment |
---|---|
FAO PIMS | Concentrates on agricultural crops: enter crop or pollinator species name |
CPC Pollinators of Rare Plants Database | Enter family, genus or species name, for plants or pollinators. Downloads available. |
Database of fly visitation to flowers | Access database to download |
List of crop plants pollinated by bees | Appears to be a copy of the Wikipedia list article in the previous section |
One of the outcomes of the event should be a better list, and understanding of the information out there. Please contribute suggestions.
Use of a database tends to mean entering the pollinator species or genus name.
Find images on Wikimedia Commons
[edit]An obvious starting point is commons:Category:Pollination. There are more advanced tools available, some examples being given in the code warehouse.
Particularly using these queries:
with code from the warehouse.
The page d:Wikidata:WikiFactMine/Dictionary list has a whole column of "find image" links for groups of plants. On the grand scale:
offers over 9K chances to match images into Wikidata.
