Week | Task | Time | Challenges |
---|---|---|---|
1 | In the first session, we were taught how to work Wikipedia. We found out the difference between German and English Wikipedia. We also found out how to edit an article. We translated the German Wikipedia article about the Canadian author "Johnathan Garfinkel" | 90 minutes in class, 30+ minutes at home | The main challenge was understanding how to work out the technical aspects of the Wikipedia site. |
2 | In the second class we worked on checking the Jonathan Garfinkel article, to make sure our translations were coherent. | 90 minutes in class, 30+ minutes at home | I found it difficult to make the English sound correct whilst staying true to the words of the German article. For example, in German, they said "Vom Zionismus löste" directly translating to "detached." However, although the German says that you don’t detach from a religion we worded it as "he broke away from Zionism." |
3 | We started working on the Australian pitcher plant article. | 0 minutes in class, 30+ minutes at home | This was really difficult to work out the technical terminology, because it was scientific, especially because I had not even heard of several of the words in English or German.
|
4 | We finished the Jonathan Garfinkel article and published it | 90 minutes in class, 90 min at home | The main challenge was working out editing and publishing and getting the correct links corresponding to the correct English Wikipedia page. |
5 | We translated the Jüdische Allgemeine article which was a red link as it had not been translated to English, on the Johnathan Garfinkel article. | 0 minutes in class, 30+ minutes at home | The main challenge was working out the syntax for the sentences in this article. I found it difficult to make the syntax and word order idiomatic in English. |
6 | In the next lesson we started by reading through the Jüdische Allgemeine article making sure the English captured the essence of the German. We then began adding the link to the article. | 90 minutes in class, 90+ minutes at home | It was difficult at first to work out the technical part of editing this article, in particular getting the links to appear correctly on the article when published.
|
7 | I added the links to the doomed love article | 90 minutes in class, 30+ minutes at home | I found it difficult to work the links |
