Phantasmagoria; or Sketches of Life and Literature Phantasmagoria; or, Sketches of Life and Literature by Maria Jane Jewsbury is a Romantic-era miscellany. It was published in two volumes in 1825 by Hurst, Robinson and Co. and features a variety of writings—poetry, satire, a fairy tale, personal essays, literary criticism, an analysis of a painting, etc. The text was published under “MJJ” to mask Jewsbury’s identity, and likely gender. The book is dedicated to William Wordsworth glowingly (explicitly dedicated to him on the title page, followed by a longer, more detailed dedication, which is followed by a poem written by Jewsbury for Wordsworth. References to his poetry and persona appear throughout the book. “The Young Author”, “Arria”, the “Military Spectacle”, and “The Song of the Hindoo Women” were originally published in Mr. Alaric Watts’s Literary Souvenir.
