Matty Healy[edit]Matthew Timothy "Matty" Healy (born April 8, 1989) is the English frontman of the alternative rock band The 1975. He is the son of actors Denise Welch and Tim Healy (actor). The band has released four EPs and two albums, both of which have reached no. 1 in the UK. He currently resides in London, England near bandmate George Daniel. Early life[edit]Healy met fellow bandmates Adam Hann, George Daniel, and Ross MacDonald in high school. Hann initially created the band, where Matty played drums until the lead vocalist left the band and Healy assumed the role. The band officially formed in 2002, when they performed mostly cover songs, but later started to write their own songs[1]. The band played under various titles before eventually reaching the name The 1975; Healy cites a date in the back of a Jack Kerouac poetry book as the inspiration. [2] Healy had a chaotic upbringing. He describes his family as "completely mental. We love each other so much. We’re so close, so tactile, and we kick the shit out of each other ... my parents drank for years... I grew up in a party house in the 90s. It wasn’t distressing. It was exciting."[3] Throughout his early life his mother struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts[4], which Healy rehashes in the lyrics of She Lays Down off their sophomore album, I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It. However his parents often provided the links to famous musicians that prompted Matty to pursue music.[3] His brother Louis Healy was born in 2001. Healy graduated from school with three GCSEs, his lack of academic motivation due to his desire to focus on the band. He went to university but quit shortly after, working in a Chinese restaurant while his bandmates continued school.[3][5] Personal life[edit]Matty had a long term relationship with model Gemma Janes which ended in 2014.
