Maria Assunta Giulia Volpi Nannipieri (25 October 1892 – 16 March 1940), best known under the pen name Mura, was an Italian writer, journalist and playwright, specialized in romance novels.
Life and career
[edit]Born in Bologna, the daughter of a waiter and a housewife, Nannipieri grew up between Livorno and Milan, where his father found work as a food peddler.[1] She embarked on her literary activity at the encouragement of her friend Annie Vivanti, a famous poet and novelist she knew during a Vivanti's holiday trip in Gavirate, and took her pen name from Vivanti's novel Circe.[1] She started her career collaborating with Touring Club Italiano, Il Secolo, Il Telegrafo and Novella.[1] Mainly active in the romance novel genre, her style was trasgressive, anti-conformist and erotic.[1] Her first novel, Perfidie, was written in 1912 and released only in 1919, and dealt with a lesbian love.[1] She had her breakout in 1921 with Piccola, and was author of over 40 books, which in total sold over one million copies.[1] and starting from her first novel often dealt with taboo themes, such as lesbian
she was also author of essays, short stories, stage comedies, children books and collections of aphorisms.[1]
