Castlewellan Town F.C. (also known as The Town) is a football club based in the village of Castlewellan in County Down, Northern Ireland. The club field numerous teams in both the Newcastle and District Football League [1] and in the Downpatrick Youth Football League [2]. The club play out of the Bann Road playing fields in Castlewellan. The club's First team are currently coached by John Burns and Aidan Kelly, a managerial partnership who led the club to an impressive treble in the 2011/12 season [3]
History
[edit]Football has a long and distinguished history in the Castlewellan area with the first recorded match taking place in 1900 between a Castlewellan Star team and near neighbours Annsborough. Football continued to develop in Castlewellan in years subsequent, for a time under the guidance of Mr Barney Tumelty who had been an assistant manager at Portadown F.C.
Forced to fold as a result of a registration issue the Castlewellan team was to reform as Castlewellan Stars, in addition to playing challenge matches against teams such as Linfield and Belfast Celtic this Stars teams produced one of the greatest talents to come out of Castlewellan in Joe Toner, who went on to play for Arsenal, St Johnstone and Northern Ireland in the 1920's.
The club in its current form was founded in 1972, and has been a mainstay of the Newcastle League since then. The 1970's and 1980's proved to be a formative era for the club, with the foundations for future success being laid by club stalwarts such as Jimmy Kelly, Paddy Corrigan, Noel Burns and Danny Keown.
The Peter Corrigan Cup
[edit]The Peter Corrigan Cup [4] is a pre-season tournament hosted annually by the club. Name after club stalwart Peter "Petsy" Corrigan, the tournament is keenly contest by the cream of local amateur football.
