The Magisterium Series is a planned 5-book middle grade fantasy series co-authored by Cassandra Clare and Holly Black and is their first collaboration together.[1] The series was acquired by Scholastic in April 2012. The first book, The Iron Trial, was published in September 2014, and hit #3 on the New York Times Middle Grade Bestseller List.[2] The books are set in a world of dark magicians in which children train as apprentices to be warriors.[3]
Synopsis
[edit]The protagonist of the series is twelve-year-old Callum Hunt. He has grown up knowing three rules: (1) Never trust a magician; (2) Never pass a test a magician gives you; and (3) Never let a magician take you to the Magisterium. In these books, we find out what happens when Callum breaks these rules, and how his life changes as a result.

Reception
[edit]The first book in the series, The Iron Trial, was well received. Kirkus praised the setting and "refreshingly nuanced" characters,[5] and a Publishers Weekly starred review predicted that the "string of ominous revelations" would leave readers wanting more.[6] Though Kirkus noted that the similarities to Harry Potter can be distracting, a reviewer at The Daily Telegraph wrote that the book "moves deftly into the gap" left by the JK Rowling series.[7]
Film
[edit]In 2012, Constantin Film acquired the rights to the book series.[8] Clare and Black will adapt the screenplay themselves, and serve as executive producers.[9] Constantin is one of the production companies behind another adaption from Clare's work, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.
