Deleted Ken Bone Article for Expansion if Bone Stays Notable
[edit]Kenneth "Ken" Bone (b. 1981-1982[1]) is an American citizen and resident of Shiloh, Illinois,[2] best known for speaking at the second of the United States presidential election debates in 2016. He asked presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, "What steps will your energy policy take to meet our energy needs, while at the same time remaining environmentally friendly and minimizing job loss for fossil power plant workers?"[3] Bone's political position as an undecided voter, in addition to his appearance, name, and demeanor, garnered him substantial media attention and status as an Internet meme.[4][5]
Early life
[edit]Bone grew up in Granite City, Illinois, where he graduated from Granite City High School.[6] A gifted drummer, while in high school Bone played in a band called Broken Vessel that covered Christian pop music in Southern Illinois. Bone was planning to move to the Twin Cities area, and he applied to attend North Central University in Minneapolis, where one of the other band members attended school, but Bone ended up staying in Illinois after he began dating his future wife Heather, who also attended Granite City High School.[7][8]
Professional career
[edit]Bone works as a power plant operator near Sparta, Illinois.[9]
Media popularity
[edit]Bone gained substantial popularity on the internet and in mainstream broadcast media following his appearance in the second 2016 U.S. presidential debate. His rise to popularity was due to his name, appearance with which he wore a red IZOD sweater, and his use of a disposable camera prior to and after the debate.[10] Electronic devices were prohibited in the debate arena. He also stated that he wore a suit, but it tore prior to the debate leaving him with no other option but to wear his now iconic red sweater.[6] Kenneth refers to his fans as "boneheads" and has stated that he welcomes his newly acquired internet fame.
On the October 15 edition of ESPN College GameDay in Madison, Wisconsin, Bone made a special appearance to ask questions of the show's hosts. His appearance also featured the red sweater made famous from his appearance in the presidential debate. Additionally, most of the crowd signs during College GameDay featured Ken Bone.[11][12]
Bobby Moynihan impersonated Bone during the cold open of the NBC sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live episode on October 15 by dancing to the song "Get Ready for This".[13][14]
Bone plans to auction off his signature red sweater, with proceeds to go toward fighting homelessness and to assist with voter registration efforts. Auction details have not yet been announced, because Bone is still being asked to wear the sweater in media appearances.[15]
Due to his internet popularity, Bone received a short-term endorsement deal with American transportation network company Uber and was a spokesman for the launch of Uber Select in St. Louis.[16][17]
Controversies
[edit]Bone has attracted controversy due to his Reddit comments, receiving criticism for his comments on the Shooting of Trayvon Martin, describing the shooting as "legally justified, but not right".[18][19]
