Top-level categories

[edit]

My proposal here is to create a new top-level Category:Tolkien as part of the "by topic" grouping of categories. My reasoning is that the Wikipedia articles related to Tolkien are a loose collection of wide-ranging categories and articles connected by the topic and sometimes also the name of Tolkien and his works. It is important to realise that no other parent categories are needed for these top-level categories - links to other areas of the category "tree" should happen a few levels below these top level categories. Specifically, this is to avoid various articles ending up "underneath" the parts of the tree in which "Tolkien the person" ends up (such as author, British, philologist, etc.).

1) Linking into the high-level Category:Categories by topic:

Propose: Category:Tolkien

Parent category: Category:Categories by topic

An alternative is to group these wide-ranging articles at Portal:Tolkien (similar to Portal:Middle-earth).

2) Linking into the high-level Category:Categories by person:

Propose: Category:J. R. R. Tolkien

Parent category: Category:Categories by person

The "by name" category follows the naming convention, but the "by topic" category is the more intuitive "Tolkien" label (no need to type out "J. R. R. " all the time). In my opinion, the "name" category needs only one category itself, as stated above. All the other categories should be for the article on J. R. R. Tolkien.

Further, consider the "Tolkien" topic category as just an aggregator tag to collect together loosely-related articles connected only by the topic of Tolkien. The "name" category should really only be for articles about the person, and should be tightly focussed on that, IMO. I am currently discussing these issues at Wikipedia talk:Categorization, here and here.

People

[edit]

List of many Tolkien-related people. Some fit in more than one category, but only listed once for now, until category organisation implemented.

Family

[edit]

Propose: Category:Tolkien family

Parent categories: Category:Tolkien; Category:J. R. R. Tolkien

Category would also have a link to a family page if and when it exists, or a suitable page with the family tree on it, or maybe even include the family tree. One version of the family tree is at Tolkien Estate.

Friends and Acquaintances

[edit]

Incomplete list, mainly of people mentioned in Biography and Letters.

Editors, Biographers and Literary executors

[edit]

Translators

[edit]

Artists

[edit]

Propose: Category:Tolkien artists

Parent categories: Category:Tolkien; Category:Artists

More artists could be added to this category. Issues of notability may be important here. And also what qualifies someone for this category. I would propose anyone who has published an artwork inspired by or representing a scene from Tolkien's works.

Musicians

[edit]

Authors/Linguists/Researchers

[edit]

Propose: Category:Tolkien scholars, researchers and authors

Parent categories: Category:Tolkien; other categories added at article level.

Producers/Actors/Directors/Adaptors

[edit]

Propose: Category:Tolkien adaptors, directors and producers

Parent categories: Category:Middle-earth adaptations. This category groups together a wide range of people and companies, and so only has one parent category. Individual entries should already be categorised under their profession. Use sort keys to sort in logical groups.

Actors

[edit]

- Propose to split by adaptations and/or medium.

Publishers

[edit]

Propose: Category:Tolkien publishers (also to include companies)

Parent categories: Category:Tolkien; Category:Publishers

Other

[edit]

Propose: Category:Tolkien

Parent categories: Category:Categories by topic or Category:Categories by person or turn into Portal:Tolkien (similar to Portal:Middle-earth).

Since this is a loose collection of wide-ranging articles connected by Tolkien, no other parent categories are needed. Specifically, this is to avoid the various articles ending up "underneath" the various parts of the tree in which "Tolkien the person" ends up (such as author, British, philologist, etc.).

Organisations

[edit]

Publishers

[edit]

Propose: Category:Tolkien publishers (also to include people)

Parent categories: Category:Tolkien; Category:Publishers

Film

[edit]

Propose: Category:Tolkien adaptors, directors and producers

Parent categories: Category:Middle-earth adaptations. This category groups together a wide range of people and companies, and so only has one parent category. Individual entries should already be categorised in a company category. Use sort keys to sort in logical groups.

Propose: Category:Tolkien companies

Parent categories: Category:Tolkien; Category:Legal entities

Games companies

Archives

[edit]

Propose: Category:Tolkien archives

Parent categories: Category:Tolkien; Category:Archives

Ideally, the category labels will be applied to articles about the actual archives themselves, rather than the currently linked articles about the institutions that house the archives.

Again, to avoid belabouring the point and the masses of websites out there, probably treat this as some kind of historical discourse and merge with the Usenet article, if there is one. Make distinction between fan and commercial and official websites.

Parodies

It would be nice to have short articles for the Silmarillion parodies. Not sure how to treat the online E-text parody.

The concerts featured music from the film, composed by Howard Shore. He also conducted at least some of the concerts. It would be nice to have an article on where and when they took place.

Alphabetical list from Wikipedia article namespace of articles linked to J. R. R. Tolkien

[edit]

On 12/04/2006, there were 1460 articles in the Wikipedia article space that linked to J. R. R. Tolkien. Further lists could include a proper mapping/listing of the category "tree" structure, and more analysis of "What links here" for other 'keystone' articles. The link below is to the What Links Here sorting tool on the toolserver.
