In May 2007, Marina and the Diamonds released her first extended play, Mermaid vs Sailor, a collection of six songs that were self-written, produced, and distributed via her Myspace profile.[1][2] To further pursue a career in the music industry, she sent copies of the EP to several major record labels with the hope of discovery. The release created a bidding war with various record companies, and ultimately led to a meeting with Neon Gold Records head Derek Davies, who signed her and formed a contract.[3][4]
A promotional CD-R version of the EP was distributed in Europe and intended for airplay rotation. Its track listing is identical to the original, physical version of the release, although it uses the radio edit of "I Am Not a Robot" instead and contains a slightly altered cover art.[5]
The Crown Jewels EP received geenerally favourable reviews from music critics. Burrows called the EP "very good" and appreciated her decision to create a pop record as opposed to a synth-pop one. She also acclaimed its "honest, accessible lyrics" and Marina's vocals, writing: "Marina and the Diamonds is one to watch this year".[6]
