We can see that the same document in a odt or doc format doesn't have the same size. The odt format is heavier.
Compressing a JPG file has several interests: it facilitates its sharing, it takes less space on your computer, and it's harder to decrypt.
Compressing an .odt file is very interesting because they are voluminous files. The experiment with the zip format shows that the zip file size is 10 times smaller than the original .odt file. Before 1998, the size file were expressed in Kio or Mio which corresponds to 2^10 and 2^20. However because of severals problems with the SI units, in 1998 the International Electrotechnical Commission decided to size file only in power of 10. So now a Ko=10^3=1000 octets.
