A Caltrop is an infantry weapon used against cavalry. It consists of two pieces of sharpened iron attached together so as to create a pyramid in which one point is always directed up thus inflicting damage on the hooves of horses. During a cavalry charge the caltrops are thrown in mass ahead of the attackers creating a formidable barrier.
