maybe we need a map for the perth metro/peel/south west distinction of what is in which, somewhere ? JarrahTree 08:34, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
ultimately (maybe in a few months) the maps used for regions will have lga's inserted in them - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peel_(Western_Australia)#/map/0 is a start, as regions are determined by lga boundaries, so it is just a case of a handle on the converting lga boundary coordinates into the regional aggregations...hopefully... cue the locality is in the shire, but it also has a town full of heritage properties that could in reasonable time have individual articles - better they are in cue western australia, than the shire - localities in the shire, heritage properties in the locality - trust there is agreement there  :)

there might have been something like Kings Park - I think being under its own Authority it might not come under an LGA - not 100% sure - probably one of the now mainly absent gang of four of the old days might have known - moondyne hesperian orderinchaos gnangarra - I am sure we/they had a conversation about this about kings park in 2007 or so - but mainly they are either not answering calls or whatever these days... try the last one he still shows signs of life... Hole in the Wall

[edit]

The category referred to the Subiaco Arts Centre building (which is cited in the article). No opinion on whether it made sense to have it there. The Drover's Wife (talk) 23:51, 5 April 2020 (UTC)

I think if pressed I'd say there should probably be a Subiaco Arts Centre and the theatre company article should be removed from the category; the Hole in the Wall article is really about a theatre company that has operated across multiple sites, they're not the only tenant of the arts centre, and looking at the heritage listing it seems the arts centre's historic significance comes from being the former town hall rather than its later use as a theatre. very amazing work ! well done ! really appreciated !!! JarrahTree 09:20, 8 April 2020 (UTC)

yes - very useful to have everything identified into lga - that makes it easier then to fit into regions - and there is a double layer of identification and makes it easier to locate and situate - and move on from the genius one line stubs the xxxx is a xxx in australia JarrahTree 10:09, 8 April 2020 (UTC)

hmmm

[edit]

I suspect you are back on the minesite again :) - my strong feeling is there is no problem about having LGA level municipal registered items as items within the system - as long as the 'highest' level is identified (federal. state. lga/municipal) - otherwise bun fights start about where things begin and end - if necessary maybe a state or national noticeboards - my rationale - if you look inside inherit info system - they identify when a property/site gets registered in which system... some never move beyond municipal level registration (having worked inside the heritage/etc area I could tell you some hairy stories about the arbitrary and politicised nature of registration) whereas some others have been at the now defunct federal levels ages ago. I say from where I have seen in real life how some things work - best to leave the larger scope 'heritage' anything - as long as inside the info we identify how far up the food chain the property/thing got... well there is a possibly very tricky way to deal with fifo transport issues (emoji left out) JarrahTree 11:24, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

I think you missed that there is a date on that list. You can't update the WA count based on today's list if the other states' count are relative to a different date. 09:26, 30 April 2020 (UTC)

Kerry Raymond Fair enough, I did miss the date. Doing a quick check of the source, looks like the list has shrunk from 398 to 388 places since 2017. I wonder what has dropped off? In any case, it could probably do with an update. Calistemon (talk) 09:30, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
Your list of numbers doesn't add up to the total, but I just double checked the counts on the various searches on the AHD and I get the same numbers as you, so I think there's one extra one somewhere that is somehow being overlooked. Kerry (talk) 11:30, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
Found it Australia House in London Kerry (talk) 11:32, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
oh dear, there's also [1] so things still don't add up. Sigh! Kerry (talk) 11:44, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
ok, I have checked each entry. The problem is the Tasmanian Seamount which is listed as EXT but comes up in the EXT search and also in the TAS search, so how to do we want to deal with it in the table. Just put a note under the table say8ng it doesn't add up because ... Kerry (talk) 12:02, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
Kerry Raymond, I noticed the discrepancy, too, after adding up the numbers, but run out of time yesterday to look further into it. The double-listing is something I have come across on WA State Registered Places, too, and have either made a note in the list or the header text, depending. It isn't so unusual here to have places like bridges that connect two LGAs listed under both. I like your Commonwealth Heritage List in Queensland, almost every place there has an article! We are not such lucky on the WA ones. I will see about sourcing the coordinates for the WA list, to align it with your Queensland one. I also want to see if I can add a separate little list below on the de-listed places. On that note, should it be mentioned in the main article that the number of places has declined by 10 since 2017? Calistemon (talk) 22:01, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
I have the WA coords ready to go, so don't worry. I have a full spreadsheet of the AHD and can generate wikitext from that. The Qld table was generated and then hand-tidied (there's always a few details that need the human touch). I am just about to start running a training session this morning but will get back to the CHL this afternoon. Kerry (talk) 23:32, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
Kerry Raymond, I didn't know about the GeoGroup template you have on Commonwealth Heritage List in Queensland. It's a great tool and also shows up when you got coordinates (drastically) wrong. I was wondering whether there was a real point having the coordinates but the way you can look at the open street map locations makes it well worth it! Calistemon (talk) 02:16, 1 May 2020 (UTC)
Once I discovered the GeoGroup template, I started adding coordinates to everything I can! I find being able to see the places discussed in an article on a map adds an extra dimension to understanding. Kerry (talk) 03:41, 1 May 2020 (UTC

shire of shark bay for places and designated locations in the shire like towns mines etc, but just shark bay for natural features  ?

does that make sense ? JarrahTree 04:55, 26 July 2020 (UTC)

You would have to look at the location, I guess. Anything within the Shark Bay World Heritage Site, definitely. Outside, not so sure. People, especially on Commmons, indiscriminately just place anything in categories of places just because they are somewhere nearby, e.g., Vlaming Head Lighthouse in Cape Ranges NP also, according to my map, it isn't in the park at all. Calistemon (talk) 05:00, 26 July 2020 (UTC)
Exactly - the association by vicinity is an atrocious and very misleading problem in commons in many many images. I think the issue is complicated by the world heritage site actually belonging in more than one local government area - and given the exascerbating trivialisation of issues by the connections and overlaps and potential confusions - ideally the world heritage site/ the local government area(s) and the issues of what fits where might leave the whole thing best left alone lest the dreaded word(s) turn up. sigh. South Kalgoorlie Gold Mine

[edit]

I've reverted your image placement in South Kalgoorlie Gold Mine, it's actually of Mt Charlotte's Cassidy Shaft, taken from the Ivanhoe headframe in the backyard of the Museum of the Goldfields in downtown Kalgoorlie, 35 km N of New Celebration. regards John beta (talk) 01:54, 20 August 2020 (UTC)

@John beta: No worries, I went by the image description which states "Elevated view of the New Celebration Gold Mine from the poppet head of the old Mt Charlotte Mine, Kalgoorlie, WA. 1993." One would have thought, of all the people, the CSIRO would get it right! Calistemon (talk) 02:24, 20 August 2020 (UTC)
Yes, I imagine the photographer got his photo locations mixed up in those pre-digital, pre-Google Earth days. I've emailed CSIRO at publishing.photos@csiro.au notifying them of the actual location of the image. regards John beta (talk) 02:35, 20 August 2020 (UTC)
Let me know what sort of reply you get. I will rename the image on commons if we got a reliable answer. Calistemon (talk) 02:36, 20 August 2020 (UTC)

that's a lot of photographs to go out and get ! JarrahTree 03:33, 16 September 2020 (UTC)

@JarrahTree: I know, didn't think there would be so many Perth suburbs without suitable photos. Some of them have a commons category with images, but nothing outstanding there. Well, next time you and your camera go through the Perth suburbs and see a good, representative shot, just take it and compare it to the articles listed in Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Perth, Western Australia. At least now there is a definite, if long, list of suburbs needing images. I was contemplating doing towns as well but that list would be even longer! Calistemon (talk) 03:39, 16 September 2020 (UTC)

which is why I wanted Perth back as a separate project (and even Freo in time) - so as to do some proper housekeeping - some perth suburb articles are pathetic short without refs created abut 8 to 12 years ago with 'xx is a suburb' - hoping to encourage local editors to help to build up photos and content - the other thing is the amount of potential forks from suburb articles of notable things - or the more bizarre situation where articles that exist that dont link to the suburb they are situated in. Chemnitzer PSV

[edit]

Chemnitzer PSV is a different club than Chemnitzer FC. Please see this French Wikipedia article on Chemnitzer PSV (you can use Google Chrome translate if you wish) and see how it differs from the Chemnitzer FC (also known previously as Chemnitzer BC). Hence why redirect needs to be removed and article either deleted or a new one created. Feudonym (talk) 04:35, 6 February 2021 (UTC)

@Feudonym: You might be right, it is rather a long time ago that I created these redirects. I had a look at the German Wikipedia article and can't see the connection either. However, nominating them for deletion as pages isn't quite correct, as they are only redirects, not pages, therefore Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion would be the correct process to follow if you want them gone. Calistemon (talk) 04:57, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the info, I will go via that process to delete the page.

However, surely the redirect should be removed immediately, if they are two completely different football clubs? They were in fact rivals! Feudonym (talk) 19:15, 6 February 2021 (UTC)

Just as an update, I've created a new article for Chemnitzer PSV therefore redirect no longer exists. Feudonym (talk) 07:16, 7 February 2021 (UTC)

@Feudonym: I think that is the best possible solution, great work! Calistemon (talk) 07:19, 7 February 2021 (UTC)

List of State Register of Heritage Places in the Shire of Broomehill-Tambellup

[edit]

List of State Register of Heritage Places in the Shire of Broomehill-Tambellup has a red-link category Category:Shire of Broomehill-Tambellup. Did/do you intend to create that category? Mitch Ames (talk) 12:30, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

Yes, I did but got sidetracked with a couple of other non-Wikipedia tasks. Calistemon (talk) 12:31, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Category:City of Kalgoorlie–Boulder requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! Talk! 15:36, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

@Liz: Just a query from my side. I created this category, then realaised that a similar one, Category:Kalgoorlie-Boulder, already exist and started a discussion about renaming this one instead, see Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2021 February 9#Category:Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Like you, I nominated the empty category for deletion but then withdrew it again because of this statement: "This category may meet Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion as a category that is empty, is not currently under discussion ...". As it is currently under discussion, can it be nominated for speedy deletion? No objection otherwise to your nomination. Calistemon (talk) 23:25, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

You are spot on. Have a look at the open street map attached. Chapman Valley is surrounded by Greater Geraldton on three sides there but no part of the site seems to be in the latter, all in the former. Sadly, Inherit gets it wrong more often than it should! List of State Registered places, or not

[edit]

You seem to have added a section "Foo heritage-listed places" - which are not state registered - to several "List of State Register of Heritage Places in Foo" articles. E.g. [4][5][6]. I suggest that either the non-stage-registered lists should be separate articles, or the articles should be renamed to more accurately reflect their contents. Mitch Ames (talk) 07:58, 25 April 2021 (UTC)

Hi Mitch, you are a little slow of the mark, List of State Register of Heritage Places in the City of Rockingham had such a list since May last year and, now that all stat heritage lists are (more or less) complete, I would like to expand them to include the municipal heritage lists as well. Many of the state heritage lists are quite small, less than 10 items on average, there is little need for separate articles. This might be different for the more populous lists. The two lists are clearly separate and defined. As far as naming goes, I leave that up to the people who enjoy being involved in endless discussions there. I prefer to be involved in content expansion, far more worth while, I believe. Calistemon (talk) 13:03, 25 April 2021 (UTC)
I've raised the matter at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Western_Australia#List_of_State_Registered_places,_or_not. Mitch Ames (talk) 03:52, 26 April 2021 (UTC)

Infobox editing

[edit]

Hi Calistemon, when you embed infoboxes into other inboboxes (like you did here) please could you use the |module= parameter (look at present code for that article for an example). Most infoboxes have a parameter like this, but sometimes the name differs. Thanks — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 07:38, 7 May 2021 (UTC)

@MSGJ: No worries. I'm not quite sure what the difference is but, on my next infobox edit, I will definitely take it to heart and do it the proper way. Calistemon (talk) 09:57, 7 May 2021 (UTC)
Many thanks for all your work! — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:00, 7 May 2021 (UTC)
@MSGJ: I'm wondering if you can help me. I'm trying to use Template:Infobox designation list inside Template:Infobox Australian place for the Beeliar Regional Park article but I'm having no luck. I tried to follow your advice but it doesn't seem to work. Could it be that this infobox does not support such a a parameter? Calistemon (talk) 02:22, 29 May 2021 (UTC)
[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited List of heritage places in the City of Joondalup, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page West Coast Highway. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
