This paper discusses sound symbolism as a design feature of language and its possible role in the evolution of language as well as individual language acquisition, alleviating, e.g., Quine's problem.

Moreover, sound symbolism is discussed within a more general bootstrapping phenomenon of iconicity in different aspects of language use like speech-accompanying gestures.
