SEVERE TROPICAL STORM KRISTINE

The Philippines' eleventh tropical cyclone of 2024, Severe Tropical Storm Kristine international name Trami, has impacted sections of Mindanao and almost all of Luzon and Visayas. Early on Thursday, October 24, Kristine touched down in Isabela before moving on to Ifugao, Mountain Province, and Ilocos Sur. But even before it made landfall, it was pelting many areas, including Eastern Visayas and Bicol, with moderate to heavy rain. Nearly two weeks after the massive flooding and widespread landslides caused by the Severe Tropical Storm Trami, also known locally as Kristine, especially in Region 5, new information has surfaced that emphasizes the ongoing need for more relief efforts for the affected population as floodwaters start to recede. As severe storm Kristine was leaving the Philippine Area of Responsibility, Tropical Cyclone Kong-rey locally known as Leon moved close to the country's eastern coast and strengthened into a super typhoon. As regions previously affected by severe storm Kristine, this resulted as more rainfall and high winds, especially in Northern Luzon and the Batanes group of islands. A better picture of the degree of devastation and the needs of those living in impacted regions has surfaced as floodwaters subside and access to once inaccessible communities improves. Farmers and fishermen impacted, agriculture is one of the most severely impacted industries. Damage to agriculture is expected to have cost more than PHP 6 billion. Numerous farmlands are still inundated, according to field assessments, and it is unclear when replanting will start.
