Fang Yuan (Chinese: 袁芳; pinyin: FāngYuán) (born 1982) is a well-known Chinese classical pianist. Yuan is not only a marvelous Chinese pianist, but also an excellent educator in China. She currently resides in Beijing.
Studying life in China and Germany
1982, Fang Yuan was born in Xuzhou city, Jiangsu province. Fang Yuan began playing Piano at age 4, receiving primary piano education from her mother, at 5, Fang Yuan gave her first stage performance for the French Educational Delegation.
At 11, after many years of constant diligent studies and practices, Fang Yuan’s remarkable intelligence and music performance sent her to the Music School attached to China Central Conservatory of Music, as a student with Professor Yuan Wu, who is a well-known pianist educator in China. After her graduation from the middle school, she continued her piano study in Germany by studying with Gerhard Oppitz and Michael Schäfer and took Master-Class with Paul-Badura Skoda , Andras Schiff and Klaus Hellwig. In 2005, she received Bachelor and Master Degrees of Arts in Piano Performance from Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, and then in 2007 and 2008, Fang Yuan received Meisterklasse Diplomas in Piano Performance and Chamber Music respectively from Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, which are the highest degrees in the school identified for Performance in Germany, and recognized as Doctorate degrees by Ministry of Education of China.
1988 Awards in Children Piano Competition of Jiangsu Province, and studied under Prof. Huiying Guo.
1989 Went to Beijing at the age of 7 and studied under Prof. Yuan Wu, a famous Chinese piano educator, prior vice-headmaster of Central Conservatory of Music and vice-director of piano department, receiving many prizes in provincial and local competitions.
1991 Moved with her parents to Shenzhen, studied under Prof. Meisheng Mai of Guangzhou Xinghai Conservatory of Music at the age of 9.
1993 Admitted to the Music School attached to the Central Conservatory of Music majored in piano and studied 8 years in the class of Prof. Yuan Wu. In the school, she gave many concerts every year and won prizes in competitions at home and abroad, such as Sino-French Milteau Piano Competition. She also received guidance from many famous pianists and educator, such as Zhaoyi Dan, Qifang Li, Zhihong Guo, Guangren Zhou.
2001 She went to Germany and studied at Hochschule für Musik und Theater München with scholarship. She became the first Chinese student of Gerhard Oppitz, the famous pianist of the world.
2005 Achieved Master’s Degree of Art from Hochschule für Musik und Theater München with the highest score, and admitted directly to Meisterklasse Diploma Program with Porf. Michael Schäfer. . 2007 she finished the courses of Piano Performance Meisterklasse Diploma with outstanding scores.
2008 she finished courses of Chamber Music Meisterklasse Diploma with the highest grade attainable, and gave Chamber Concerts in Germany and Switzerland, attracting the attention of local media.
Performing and Recording Career Since 2001, during her study in Germany, Fang Yuan has given many performances throughout Germany. The major performences as follows:
Oct. 2001, Fang Yuan, newly arrived in Germany, gave a concert in the famous Max-Joseph-Saal Hall in Munich and another one in Hannover, making her debut in the country, obtaining good reviews from the media.
2004 Awarded the highest prize, the Audience Choice Award for Best Feature, the Best Classical Award, and the Best Romantic Style at the Munich International Youth Piano Competition, and was invited to join the Pianistenclub in Munich.
In the same year, she gave a Piano-Duo Recital in Munich.
Since 2004, she was invited by Pianistenclub to give concerts in famous halls, such as Kaulbach-Villa, SchlossSeefield, Steinway-Haus, in Munich and other cities of Germany.Also she was honored as “The Youngest and most Popular Pianist in Pianistenclub of Munich.”
she has performed frequently in the annual piano festival of Hochschule für Musik und Theater München.
she has given solo concerts in Steinway-Haus of Munich every summer. Her personal concerts were promoted by Klassik 4 of Bavaria Broadcasting TV Station, the most professional classical music channel in Germany.
2006, she was admitted to “Live Music Now” program of the Menuhin Foundation, and gave frequently concerts as solist and chamber musician. (The Menuhin Foundation is a well-known professional music organization in Germany and Austria, providing exposure for young musicians.)
she collaborated with singers in the class of Prof. Helmut Deutsch and performed the “ItalienischesLiederbuch” of Hugo Wolf at the Munich vocal festival.
2007, she collaborated with Carolina Ullrich, the winner of the last ARD Music Competition, and gaved Lieder Recitals.
In the same year, she gave a Solo Recital in Liszt-Salon Weimar.
Most importantly, as a chamber music pianist, Fang Yuan is innovative by creating the MHM-Klavierquintett and Spianato Piano Trio, and successfully planned the Euro-tour and China Tour. 2007, as a key member in Quintet group, Fang Yuan was a contractual musician for the Max-Reger-Tage international festival in Bavaria and she gave a Piano Quintet Concert in Weiden in September. The member of the Quintet: Noah Bendix-Balgley (the concertmaster of Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra), Johanna Kölmel, Benedikt Schneider, Sarah Wiederhold. This group was invited to perform in different festivals, also in Switzerland. 2008, Spianato Piano Trio made a tour in Germany.
Since 2008, during her teaching in China, Fang Yuan has given many concerts home and abroad of Solo Recital, Concerto and Chamber music. She is also a popular guest artist invited to master-classes and music festivals.
She gave concerts in the U.S.A, Switzerland, Greece, Spain and Germany. She collaborated with major Chinese Orchestra, like China National Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Beijing Symphony Orchestra, China Radio Sympdony Orchestra, Tianjin Symphony Orchestra, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, Xiamen Symphony Orchestra. She played under the conductor Xiaoying Zheng, Jia Lv, Christian Ehwald, Orhan Salliel, Yongyan Hu, Yi Zhang, Zhonghui Dai, Daye Lin.
At Sintra Music Festival in Portugal she played with cellist Jian Wang, She has given the Winterreise Lieder tour with Brian Montgomery(baritone). She played Chamber music Recital with Ye-Eun Choi, Siqing Lv, Xi Chen, Valery Popov.
2009-2011, she premiered new compositions in the Beijing modern music festival.
Significantly, in 2011, Fang Yuan Piano Multimedia Solo Concert was put on the universiade art festival.
She played in every concerthall in major cities in China, like National Centre for the Perfoming Arts, Zhongshan Hall, Tianjin Concert Hall, Qintai Theatre, Hongkong City Hall, etc.
Her CD and DVD through the Alps have been released by China Record. She has also recorded for the 211 Excellent Chamber Music Series.
