Julius Tannenbaum (December 6, 1919 Newark, New Jersey – December 14, 2002 was an American film producer best known for his work on Carl Lerner's Black Like Me
Tannenbaum was born in Newark, New Jersey on December 6, 1919, the second of four sons of Jewish parents Nathan Tannenbaum, a carpenter born in Milejczyce, Poland, and Etta Shapiro, born in Brooklyn, New York.
He married Hanna Marja Kochanowicz (visual artist and sculptor) January 5, 1948 in Manhattan, New York City, New York. They had two children:
- Robin Tannenbaum (1951 – 2020), who was a soundman at the Metropolitan Opera from 1989 – 2009
- Carol Delanoy (b. 1953)
He was added to the Hollywood blacklist after June 1950 as was Carl Lerner, who would later direct Black Like Me.
In 1958, while living in New York City, he was a public relations consultant to the National Parapegia Foundation and a member of the Screen Directors Guild. He directed and filmed "No Man Walks Alone."
In 1964 he produced Black Like Me on a budget of $400,000. According to his younger brother, Jerome Tannenbaum, he used unpaid extras, like his brother Jerome to fill in some continuity shots. Jerome Tannenbaum said he was proud to have been in an uncredited role, subbing for James Whitmore when he was tying his shoe.[1]
