The kiselguhr is disolved in water and metered into the hazy beer before entering the filter. After filtering the kieselguhr may not enter the public sewage system. It has to disposed of as speciale garbage.
There are different types of Kieselguhr filters:
- Kieselguhr layer frame filters: The filter layers are vertically organized. The kieselguhr is stopped on the cellulose layers and keeps the trub out of the beer, because the hazy particels are bigger than the openings in the layer. To keep the layers from cloging up, more kieselguhr is added constantly.
- Kieselguhr horizontal siff frame filter: Its simmilar to the Kieselguhr layer frame filter, but the layers are lying horizontal in the filter.
- metal gap candle filter: The filter is made of wound metal wire. The candles hang down horizontaly in the head plate.
