The University of Michigan Friars is an all-male a cappella singing group formed at the University of Michigan in 1955. They are best known for singing popular songs in a cappella style and even rewriting the lyrics for certain songs to make them relevant to the University and Ann Arbor. Their shows are often known for their humor and lighthearted joking.
History
[edit]The Friars were formed in 1955 by the University of Michigan Glee Club director Dr. Walter Collins. Since its inception the Friars have been an octet and an offshoot of the Men’s Glee Club. They took their name after a former prestigious drinking club at the University called The Friars that was active in the early 1900s. The Friars' first concert occurred on November 12,1955 in a joint concert with The University of Michigan and Indiana University Men’s Glee Clubs.
