The U.S. Open Cup is an annual soccer competition open to adult teams in the United States that are affiliated with the United States Soccer Federation. The 2001 edition was the 88th edition, and it included 36 teams (<TODO>: dell'apa source references 200+ teams...) that ranged from professional to amateur teams. The 12 participating MLS clubs entered in the second round, facing teams from PDL, USASA, and other leagues.

Both finalists, the LA Galaxy and the New England Revolution, play in MLS and entered the league during the inaugural 1996 season. <TODO: last meeting?>
