The Neistat Brothers is a 2010 American autobiographical short film collection by the eponymous brothers, Casey and Van Neistat. The eight-part series premiered on HBO in June 2010.

Production

[edit]

Entrepreneur Tom Scott met the Neistat brothers through a mutual friend and spent a year creating the series with them.[1] Scott is credited as executive producer.[2] The series was primarily made at 368 Broadway, Lower Manhattan, New York City.[1][3] It was filmed with consumer-grade cameras and edited on iMovie.[2]

Scott brought on Christine Vachon as a consulting producer in order to connect with HBO.[1][2] The team sold the series to HBO in 2008 at the end of President of Entertainment Carolyn Strauss's tenure.[1]

Reception

[edit]

Brian Lowry for Variety wrote, "Like or hate things, I’m seldom so numb I can’t even muster the energy to write a review."[4] Barry Garron for The Hollywood Reporter wrote, "What their films lack in sophistication, though, they make up for in humor and honesty, infused with an utterly genuine warmth and lack of pretense."[5] Hank Stuever of The Washington Post wrote, "Dave Eggers-style insouciance and wonder to it, at once old fashioned and high-tech; both punk and sweetly tender."[3]
