Pingle’s Farm Market

[edit]

Pingle’s Farm Market is a farm located at 1805 Taunton Road East, Hampton, Ontario, L0B 1J0. Owner Walter Pingle, affectionately known as "Farmer Wally" opened the farm over 25 years ago.[1] Pingle’s is now a place where people go, particularly around the holidays, to take part in many festivities and be surrounded by many family friendly events. Pingle’s is open weekdays and weekends , and is commonly known for the farm market and bakery section in which fresh grown produce is offered that is grown on the farm, and brought in from other farms in Ontario.[2] Pingle’s farm market and bakery is open every day, even holidays, until Christmas. At the farm itself they grow, and therefore sell: asparagus, rhubarb, strawberries, raspberries, sweet corn, cucumbers, dill weed, tomatoes, zucchini, watermelon, cabbage, fall raspberries, apples, and pumpkins. Pingle’s farm bakery has become famous for their homemade butter tarts, while also offering frozen yogurt, fresh fudge, fresh pies, pound cakes, meat pies, sausage rolls, and much more.[3]

Garden Centre

[edit]

Pingle’s garden center is another popular attraction.[4] The greenhouse area was renovated in 2014, allowing for more space for flowers such as annuals, box plants, planters, hanging baskets, and hanging bags. As well as offering a wide variety of flowers, Pingle’s provides knowledgeable staff that can do custom planting in planters that customers bring with them.

Holidays

[edit]

Pingle’s farm becomes particular busy around the holiday season, attracting their biggest amount of customers. Between fall and winter, they bring in more entertainment and offer more events. Apple picking becomes available in September, as well as the pumpkin patch October 1st. With one of the largest pumpkin patches, Pingle’s offers wagon rides down through the pumpkin patch. An 8 acre corn maze is offered with different events and prizes for people of all ages. In 2015, Pingle’s is teaming up with the Oshawa Generals hockey team to support their 2015 memorial cup win. Open 8-5 daily, the maze entails answering challenging questions to be completed throughout the experience. Although fall is typically the most popular time to visit Pingle’s, there are different events throughout the year for holidays such as Easter and Christmas.

Durham Region Seasonal Availability Guide

[edit]

Pingle’s provides information regarding the Durham Regional Seasonal Availability Guide which enables customers to understand when the produce that Pingle’s grows is in season. Pingle’s website uses Durham Farm Fresh to demonstrate optimum picking time and availability. The website includes information about fruits and vegetables, their off season, and extended seasons. This tool is used throughout many farms to ensure customers know the when the fruit they are receiving is at its best. [5]

Sponsors

[edit]

Pingle’s is closely related to radio stations in Ontario. These radio stations act as sponsors for the farm, bringing attention to people in the area about the events that Pingle’s holds. In return, the radio stations are mentioned in relation to the big events held at Pingle’s farm. These radio stations associated with Pingle’s are KX96, CKDO, and 94.9 the ROCK. KX96 is the biggest sponsor of Pingle’s farm, being known as one of the biggest country music stations in the local area, providing a lot of coverage of Pingle’s farm.[6]

Farm Property Tax Guide

[edit]

Pingle’s farm is part of the Farm Property Tax Rate Program meaning that it is classed as a farm and is only taxed 25% of the municipal residential tax rate. Eligibility for this tax break is determined by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC). Tax exemptions such as these allow for farms to make a higher profit without paying high residential taxes. Pingle’s is eligible for this tax break because the property is used as a farming operation generating Gross Farm Income (GFI) of at least $7,000. [7]
