'Old English name with the first recorded spelling of the Bozward family name by Richard de Baresworth, in the Pipe Rolls of Leicestershire (c1206). This was during the reign of King John, known as "Lackland" 1199 - 1216. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation.
