Plot
[edit]The plot revolves around Sakamoto Ryoma, represented by Kazuma Kiryu, who infiltrates the Shinsengumi in search of the man who killed his foster father, Yoshida Tōyō. A masked assailant used Tennen Rishin-ryū, a fighting style used by the Shinsengumi, to kill him. Ryoma later travels to Kyoto and lives under the name Saitō Hajime. In the midst of the conflict between the Tokugawa shogunate, which maintains a military government, and the Ishin-shishi, who wish to overthrow the shogunate, Ryoma secretly investigates the members of the Shinsengumi in hopes of tracking down the murderer.
The story also contains multiple characters from previous Yakuza titles representing real-life historical figures.
Gameplay
[edit]The player controls Sakamoto Ryoma in an open world. Battles are central to the game, as Ryoma has four different battle styles: Hand-to-Hand, Sword, Gun, and Wild Dance. Various weapons can be collected and upgraded. Other aspects of the game include minigames present in other Yakuza titles, such as karaoke, gambling, shogi, mahjong and fishing. Ishin also presents new minigames:
- Another Life, in which Ryoma helps a girl named Haruka pay off her debt. Ryoma can grow vegetables for Haruka to sell, as well as peddle fish and other items.
- Battle Dungeon, where Ryoma can undertake missions to earn money and items. A collectible card system exists within the minigame. Cards can be equipped to grant Ryoma abilities or buffs during the mission.
- Traditional dance, a rhythm game where the player presses buttons on the D-pad or face buttons in time with music.
