Jonas Knutsson, saxophonist in jazz and folk music, composer, arranger, producer and pedagogue, born Umeå Sweden, 1965.
Early life
[edit]Jonas grew up with the annual Umeå Jazz Festival and fell in love with the saxophone. He soon began playing alto with the local wind band and became a member of jazz-rock band “Cabazz”. Musical studies brought him in touch with traditional Sami yoik singing, leaving him with a fascination for the luminescent melodies of northern Scandinavia. The deeper layers of this “folk music connection” led him to explore the soprano saxophone, adding extended vocabulary to his playing.
Career
[edit]Since his move to Stockholm in 1983 Jonas has continued to translate the language of jazz into the tradition of folk music in numerous collaborations and settings, playing and recording with “Elise Einarsdotter Ensemble”, “Encore”, “Enteli”, “Mynta”. “Nordan”, “Stockholm Folk Big Band” and “Triptyk”. “Betrand Reaudin’s L’Arbre Voyage” and “Jonas Knutsson Band”. Along the way, the deeper voice of the baritone sax has been added, when the music has called for a more steady foundation. In recent years Jonas has been working in educational projects on different levels and writing commissioned works for various ensembles. He continues to elaborate on Scandinavian fiddle music and has taken a special interest in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, transcribing selected works by Bach for solo saxophone. At any given moment, his focus is always clear – it’s all about melody.
Present
[edit]Jonas is presently performing with “Berger-Knutsson-Spering”, with “Beches Brew” and with the duo “Norrland”, formed with guitarist Johan Norberg . With three albums on the German label (ACT) “Norrland” has toured all over Europe. He is also touring and recording with fellow artist Nils Landgren and is the founding leader of the ensembles “Horn Please” and “Jonas Knutsson Quartet”. 2015 “Jonas Knutsson Trio” was invited to play at Paris Jazz Festival, an open-air concert with Johan Norberg, guitar and Khalid Kouhen, percussion in the botanical garden Parc Floral de Paris. 2013 his lyrical anthem “Hymn”, written in 1994, appeared on Avicii’s debut album True, now given the name “Dear Boy”.
