The Liget Gallery is perhaps the last independent gallery to have opened during the last decade of communism in Hungary and survived, even thrived, during the years of political change. Under the constant leadership of artist Várnagy Tibor, whose curatorial style has been to hand artists the key to the front door and trust them to do their best work within the limits of its small space, the gallery remains, to this day, a vital venue for the Central European avant-garde. That numerous international artists have also exhibited at the Liget Gallery is a testament both to Várnagy's doggedness and to the reputation that the gallery has earned since opening in 1983.
