Henri Dowd was born in Melbourne Australia on the 5th of March 1967. Henri attended Brighton Grammar School from primary through secondary levels and he soon realised that his strengths were in his creative talent as his exams scores where in the mid to high 80's. In year 10 Henri was requested on a school camp volunteer project to develop an illustration of a newly built bridge over the creek which he was also involved with in its construction phase. The humble yet technically proficient illustration was utilised in the school newsletter on the front cover.

Henri's impressionist artwork project of the houses of parliament in London was a study of Claude Monet. Henri also produced a 3 dimensional sand stone sculpture which was years ahead of its time was exhibited in the main Brighton Grammar School staff office building in the early nineteen eighties.

When Henri Dowd left high school his vocational orientation was directed towards a career in commercial art. Henri was soon employed in the screen printing industry. He worked at Veronica Textiles for nearly three years and was fully trained and highly competent in the craft of hand screen printing of quality fabrics using the traditional methods.

In that period of time Henri learn't to create designs, develop film bromides and make repeat patterns as the main stages of the process. The next stage is to make screens by stretching and glueing the mesh onto a metal frame. Then applying a photo-sensitive emulsion to the screen and when dry it was ready to receive the film art to be positioned on the screen and then exposed to a carbon arc lamp so as to etch the image with light to embed the negative of the design into the mesh as the stencil.

The third stage is to mix the inks which used a colour matching process guided by the pantone matching system. The use of concentrated pigments mixed with a binder and thickner in prescribed proportions became an exacting process and very consistent. The sampling process involved laying of the clients fabric on an adhesive surface on the 40 metre long tables which have a rail system which guides the screen carriage along the table as to print the repeatable pattern in meterage. The choice of mesh and squeegee and weight applied are very important to achieve a sharp quality print and understanding the variables of type of fabric construction and thickness and viscosity and type of ink are essential to achieving the intended outcome successfully.

After aproximately a year in the production team Henri was promoted to production manager. Veronica Textiles have a proud reputation known around Australia as the best in hand printed textiles and have a broad and impressive cliental. Once acquiring all these skills at Veronica in nearly three years, Henri sensed that he needed a change of environment in which to further develop his career objectives.

In a short time, Henri was then employed at Len Nicholson ceramics studio to hand paint and screen print decorative images onto kitchen and bath ceramic tiles for interior designers and architects. As time progressed he envisaged establishing more diversity in his career and found a better employment prospect at Smooth as Silk. At the time the owner was facing major problems with a need to restructure his business and so Henri's role was to rebuild the business from the production side and employed several key workers and set up and managed different departments, finally settling in the art department. Working as production artist and also designer he had the opportunity of working with various fashion and corporate clients.

In 1988 he founded Henri Dowd Design and formed a partnership and established a small fashion company with financial investment from the owner of Smooth as Silk. With much research and development two designer clothing labels emerged one a radically innovative surf, skate and street wear label known as "Headrush" which was advertised on radio and the other was a classic conservative upmarket club wear range titled "Young Millionaires Club". In marketing Headrush to an adventuous street wise market they developed an advertising campaign with instore window displays at Cheapskate in Prahran and Mocean in Greville Street Sth Yarra, both in Melbourne. YMC became exclusive to The Toy Shop which was a luxury sportscar showroom in Toorak, and was owned by Henri's cousin Tom Dowd.

When Henri travelled overseas one plan was to attempt to establish a market in London and Los Angeles. He found in his stay in London, a community art market where He trialed the range with support from his friends who where living in London at the time. Also he met with another artist involved with Airbrushed T'Shirts who had his own studio/store. Their plan was to setup an exchange trade business between the two companies, so as to market Henri Dowd's labels there and his label in Melbourne Australia.

Henri returned to Australia and settled in East St.Kilda on Chapel Street and was employed at Thunderbird graphics which was owned by a friend of the family. Thunderbird Graphics merged with Artco in Brunswick and so he was re-established in the firm as Artist and Mac Operator at a time when the information technology computer age was revolutionising the desk top publishing industry.

At the time when his family restaurant "EAT Australia" was in business Henri was offered a partime job as an artist working for a friend of Andrew Dowd's at Rob Howard Productions. RHP had many clients including Myer, Country Road and Daryl Braithwaite in 1991. RHP with the support of Andrew Dowd set up an entertainment business at Cadillac Bar nightclub known as "Know Tomorrow" which was an experimental creative entertainment expo for the creative elite market and was a precursor to Soundcontrol. Henri's roles were a promoter and organiser and evolved in the entertainment on a Wednesday night each week controlling the computer DJ operations for the huge multimedia video screen. He also was invited to perform as a dancer, dancing topless modelling in Peter Alexander sleepwear shorts and hand painted in body art. Henri was also responsible for designing wearable merchandise for Know Tomorrow and another label "User friendly softwear" which he designed and produced independantly.

Henri Dowd's next career move was established at Palmer Corporation and worked as an artist and designer for Jag Jeans, Hollywood Athletic Club and Adele Palmer labels working closely on range development with the team and Adele who is known world wide, as a leading fashion designer and creative genius.
