Welcome to The Great Pennsylvania Congressional Image Scrape of 2010, in which Wikipedians locate and upload images from former and current members of Congress from Pennsylvania. All works created by the US federal government are in the public domain, which makes all Congressional pictures ripe for use in Wikipedia. [1]
- How is this going to work? - This page has links to official Congressional webpages, including links to the Internet Archive versions of those pages. Click those links to open up old versions of those webpages and find great images to upload.
- How do I do it? - It's easy! Just upload Congressional images to Wikimedia Commons at Commons:Upload. Be sure to 1) include a link to the image source and 2) tag the images with {{PD-USGov-Congress}}. Consider using the pre-filled form located here, with a relevant category from commons:Category:Members of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania.
- How do I find images to upload? - The Internet Archive takes random snapshots of these webpages. Look at at least one version per year for images. Many Congressional webpages have special "Photo Gallery" or "Media" sections with a great selection. To make sourcing easier, find the exact URL of the image by right-clicking and select "view image." Sometimes these webpages display images with Adobe Flash, which makes saving the image more difficult. Try using your computer's "print screen" button and save the image in an image editing program, like MS Paint. If you find a broken link to an image, try using the the Internet Archive to locate other versions. Beware of non-congressional images, which are probably not public domain.
- What images are worth uploading? - We especially need to locate any official high-res Congressional portraits, which are great for infoboxes. Be sure to upload signatures. To avoid duplication, Check Commons to see if an image was previously uploaded. After clearing a Congressman,
strikeoutthat name.
- Where do I sign up? - Right here:
