Cherifian Empire (in Arabic: المملكة المغربية الشريفة[1], or الدولة المغربية الشريفة, in Amazigh: ⵜⴰⵎⵏⴽⴷⴰ ⵜⴰⵛⵉⵔⵉⴼⵉⵜ ⵏ ⵍⵎⵖⵔⵉⴱ[2]) is a historical name given to Morocco between the 16th and 20th centuries, under the reign of the Saadi and then the Alawites dynasties, who both claim to be of Sharif origin (in the sense of descendants of the Prophet Muhammad)[3].
