Step Pyramid of Djoser
[edit]Built around 4,700 years ago in Saqqara, this was the first pyramid ever built by the Egyptians. Built for the burial of the Pharaoh Djoser, it was designed by a high priest and chancellor named Imhotep. Built with limestone and standing at around 200ft tall it was one of the earliest large-scale cut stone constructions.
Built with 11.6 million cubic feet of stone and clay, and once covered in tura limestone. Spanning about 20 years in construction, it consisted of 6 layers and had a chamber that spanned 90 feet deep. It was a landmark of Egyptian architecture. Underneath the pyramid lies a series of interconnected tunnels. This labyrinth spans for about 3,5 miles long.
The importance of the pyramid lies in its cultural significance, to cultivate a bridge to the afterlife so pharaohs could be reborn. For the chosen lineage to ascend to a higher plane of existence after death. In the culture death was merely seen as stepping stone
