Impact on Field of Science and Scientific Community
William L. Jorgensen’s work gave computational chemistry newfound credibility, convincing experimental organic chemists that computational chemistry can be used to gain a deeper understanding of reaction mechanisms.10 Jorgensen’s work in computational methods for drug design is used today in academic and pharmaceutical research. He is a co-founder of Melinta Therapeutics, an antibiotic company that strives to discover, develop, and commercialize novel antibiotics.8 His scientific contributions range from quantum chemical and statistical mechanical simulations of condensed-phase systems to organic chemistry and pharmaceutical drug discovery.10 Jorgensen is a pioneer in incorporating solvent molecules into previously simple quantum mechanical models of organic molecules and enzymatic systems. His research has created some of the most popular molecular mechanical force fields for liquids, solutions, and biopolymers.10 His computational methods model organic and enzymatic reactions in solution. In Jorgensen’s lab, potential drugs are designed using calculations on proteins and organic molecules. His research has led to the discovery of potential anti-HIV and anti-inflammatory drugs.9
