Frédéric Malle, born on July 17th 1962 in Paris, is a French perfume publisher.

Biography

[edit]

After getting his French Baccalauréat in Paris, Frédéric Malle undertakes an Art History degree from New York University and the Sothebys Works of Art Course.

He then worked for three years in an advertising agency.

In 1988 Paris Frédéric Malle professionally joins the world of perfumery at the the most prestigious perfume laboratory at the time: Roure Bertrand Dupont. He has a pivotal mentor, perhaps the greatest perfume evaluator of all time and chairman of Roure, Jean Amic. Here Frédéric Malle develops his knowledge of raw materials, perfume making techniques, and ultimately learns the rigor of perfume creation from its finest creators.

After years of working as a consultant to some of the best French and International perfume companies Frédéric Malle decides to assume a new phase.

Les Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle

[edit]

In 2000, Frédéric Malle introduced Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle. He embarks on a singular venture to return perfumery to its luxury status by inviting nine top perfumers to create a perfume with complete creative and financial freedom.

“Editions de Parfums” can be translated from the French as “Perfume Publishing House” and that was exactly the arrangement Frédéric Malle had in mind. Just as a literary publisher provides an opportunity and infrastructure to enable his authors to write, Malle wanted to offer his perfumers full freedom to express themselves.

Frédéric Malle grew up in a family involved in perfumery: his grandfather Serge Heftler founded Parfums Christian Dior. Through his experiences working in the perfumery industry, he has a deep knowledge of the raw materials used in perfumes and a strong sense of olfactory balance. Malle is an “evaluator,” the insider’s term for the specialist who draws on his understanding of fragrance structure and accords to critique a fragrance composition.

Perfumers call on him to assess their works in progress and to exchange ideas. His involvement depends on the project and ranges from total non-intervention to sleeves-rolled-up creative partnerships with the noses. Similar to the finest literary publishing houses, the collection grows over time. Today it has 19 perfumes and beautiful home fragrances ( with, among others, 12 candles and the Fleur Mécanique, a machine capable of diffusing a completely natural odor of a bouquet of flowers upon request).
