Giuseppe Filippi
[edit]Giuseppe Filippi (Montanera, 25 November 1864 - Sangano, 3 June 1956) was one of the first operator for the Lumière brothers.
Life
[edit]Giuseppe Filippi was born in 1864 in Montanera, his father was Giacomo Filippi and the mother was called Maria Zavattero.[1] They had six children, and Giuseppe was the fifth.[2] When he was 19, he started working in the post office in Cuneo. He got married in 1888 and in 1890 he was transferred to the post office in Milan.
As he grew continued to cultivate his great passion for photography, until when he became a close friend of Vittorio Calcina, who was the Italian General Sales Agent for the "Società Augusto Lumière e figli" (in English The Augusto Lumière and Sons society). Thanks to Calcina, he was able to finally meet the Lumière brothers, and buy from them a movie projector and a movie camera, together with some film stocks to exhibit in Italy. [3][4]
The first projections of the movies were held in Milan, where he created one of the first Italian short-films: I Bagni di Diana (in English Diana's Baths)[5], at the homonymous pool of Porta Venezia. This movie was recently recovered by the Fondazione Cineteca Italiana.[6]
After living for 4 years in South America, he came back to Italy and moved to Sangano, near Turin, on 29 August 1939.[7]
