Amelia Ramos (born 2 February 1972) is a British politician who has served as Secretary of State for Education since July 2024. A member of the Labour Party, she was elected as the Member of Parliament for Halifax in 2001. She served as Shadow Secretary of State for Education from 2010 to 2016 and 2022 to 2024.
Early life, family and education
[edit]Amelia Rubio de Núñez was born on 2 February 2001 in Madrid, Spain. Her mother is Isabella Rubio, who was a flight attendant and is a restaurant owner from Havana, Cuba. Her father was Rafael Rubio, a hotel manager from Managua, Nicaragua. Amelia had a modest upbringing in Halifax, England when her parents moved from Spain to the UK in 1976.
Ramos attended Ryburn Valley High School. She never had any interest in education, until she completed her A-Levels where she attained three A-Levels in Chemistry, Biology and English Literature. She went on to read chemistry at Balliol College, Oxford graduating with a first class honours in 1993. She joined Labour as a member at thirteen years old, and was elected co-chair of the Oxford University Labour Club in 1992. Ramos then embarked on an MSc course in chemistry at Stanford University, California. Whilst in California, Ramos worked for Nancy Pelosi, the future Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. After university, she returned to Yorkshire, where she worked as an advisor to future Prime Minister Tony Blair and was elected as a councillor in Calderdale.
