The East European State University in Przemyśl

The East European State University in Przemyśl is a public institution of tertiary education set up in Przemyśl in 2001. Its initial name was the State Higher Vocational School in Przemyśl, but in 2006, pursuant to the order of the Polish government it was changed to the East European State University. It was originally designed to teach the liberal arts, following the oldest academic traditions in Przemyśl: the 15th-century capitular school with a rector appointed by the Kraków Academy, and the 17th-century Jesuit college. Yet the University authorities were open to change and in 2006 extended the educational offer by an artistic subject: Interior Design, and in 2009 by a first technical course, Environmental Engineering. In 2010 another engineering course was introduced: Mechatronic Engineering. Currently, the University offers about twenty courses in the fields of the arts, social sciences, technology and medicine.

The East European State University in Przemyśl offers free bachelor’s degree courses, engineering and master’s degree courses. Its educational offer also includes postgraduate studies as well as training courses.

Location of the University

All the University buildings are located in and around the Lubomirski Park in Książąt Lubomirskich Street (the Bakończyce district). Apart from the historic Lubomirski Palace, the classes take place in the modern buildings of Kolegium Wschodnie and Kolegium Techniczne with its labs and workshops. The campus is complete with the University Library and a student hostel.

Awards

In 2004 and 2009 the Polish Accreditation Committee awarded a positive assessment to the Polish Studies course run at the Institute of Polish Studies, and in 2007 to Political Science at the Institute of Political Science and Regional Policy. In 2014 a positive assessment was given to Polish Studies at the Institute of the Humanities and Arts and in 2018 to Mechanical Engineering at the Institute of Technical Sciences.

In 2017 the East European State University in Przemyśl ranked first among the state vocational University in the “Premium Brand” reputation ranking of Polish institutions of higher education.

In 2019 and 2020 the University was granted an award of the Polish Minister of Science and Higher Education, Dr Jarosław Gowin, for the best results in the field of graduates’ careers as part of the “Teaching Excellence Initiative”.

University of the Third Age at the EESC

In 2009 the first edition of the University of the Third Age courses started at the EESC.

International activity

Collegium Carpathicum is an educational project for academic teachers’ exchange within the network of universities in the Carpathians area, which started on 1 September 2018. Apart from the EESC, the following institutions are also involved in the project: the Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine, University of Prešov in Slovakia, University of Ostrava in the Czech Republic, the Ștefan cel Mare University of Suceava in Romania, Pázmány Péter Catholic University in Budapest, Hungary, and University of Warsaw, which coordinates the project. It is planned to involve more universities in the future: University of Rzeszów, Masaryk University in Brno, the Czech Republic, University of Debrecen, Hungary and Uzhorod National University, Ukraine.

The East European State University has also been cooperating with young people of Polish origin and maintaining friendly relations with foreigners interested in Poland through the annual initiative of the International Summer School of Polish Language and Culture.

The Library

The EESC Library was originally housed at the Lubomirski Palace and in 2007 it moved to a new facility built with the support from the European Regional Development Fund.

The EESC Library has gathered a collection of books on diverse subjects, mostly related to the University profile, necessary to carry out the teaching process. The book collection includes publications on history and its auxiliary sciences, sociology, psychology, public relations, philosophy, social and political sciences, law, language studies, law and administration sciences, economic and natural sciences and liberal arts and architecture.

The collection is constantly expanding via purchases, exchange and donations. Currently it amounts to over 64,000 volumes of books and nearly 4,300 copies of periodicals.

The library also has a special collection of approximately 200 copies including cartographic items and recordings (audiotapes, videotapes and CDs).

Nearly 800 items are digitalized manuscripts of rare texts from the 19th and early 20th centuries (largely on the history of the Eastern Borderlands), maps, plans, photographs and some newspapers and magazines.
