Annual Merryman Broomball Tournament
[edit]A broomball tournament that takes place annually between December and February near Panora, Iowa on frozen Lake Panorama, Iowa. This local tournament began in 2011 on the Mississippi River near Guttenberg, Iowa and continues to this day in its 8th year.[1]
The participation has grown each year and many people from the surrounding community come out to watch the tournament take place. The 2018 tournament will take place Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Horseshoe Cove on Lake Panorama, Iowa.
Broomball
[edit]An ice sport similar to hockey, players utilize shoes instead of skates, a ball instead of a puck, a broom instead of a stick, a larger net, and a smaller rink size.
Rules
[edit]The goal of the game is to get the ball into the net of the opposing team while defending the team's own goal. Games are played with 10 minute halves. If the score is tied after 2 halves, an over time Golden Goal, "first to score" with 5 minute periods will take place. One player is eliminated from each teams on-ice players every period after the 1st overtime.
Tournament
[edit]The annual broomball tournament either consists of a triple-elimination tournament or preliminary pool play with a knock-out round. Following play the winning team receives the Golden Broom.
