I'm a distance runner and so are my German Shepherd dogs; They love to run with me. Why? Most medium and large dog breeds were bred to work alongside humans pulling sleds, herding sheep and so on. As a result, dogs have enormous energy and an instinctive drive to work at their master's side. When dogs do not get adequate exercise this energy and instinctive drive typically finds release in unwanted behaviors. Lack of exercise is the reason many dogs are too out of control and are turned over to shelters. A tired dog is a good dog!
