The city of Split, part of Yugoslavia before World War II, was heavily bombed during the war. The city was initially bombed by the Axis during the invasion of Yugoslavia, but the most devastating bombings were carried out by the Allies.
Background
[edit]The Kingdom of Yugoslavia was invaded in April 1941, following the Yugoslav coup d'état. Its territories were partitioned between Italy, Nazi Germany, Hungary, Bulgaria, Albania and the Independent State of Croatia, a newly-formed puppet state. With the signing of the Treaties of Rome, parts of Dalmatia, including Split, were annexed by Italy, becoming part of the Governorate of Dalmatia
