High Captains of the Azhasavvan Pirate Confederacy

[edit]
No. High Captain Fleet of origin High Quartermaster(s) Term Life details
1 Morgan Mattin Western Fleet Kiyoran Sam 1097-1133 AT (36 years) First High Captain and former Captain of the Western Fleet, elected at the Council of Blood in 1097. Established the Confederacy's legal system with the help of Kiyoran Sam (including the sovereign arbitration system, the free ports, and the electoral system), fought in the Azhasavvan Wars of Unification and the Gash'i-Azhasavvan Slave War, and was responsible, alongside Kiyoran Sam, for establishing the Confederacy as a regional power. Voluntarily retired from the position in 1133 and spent the rest of his life in a mansion in Hoskaport, where he died of natural causes in 1140.
2 Shelley Shell Shellwright Eastern Fleet 1133-1142 AT (9 years) Second High Captain, elected by the band captains (primarily of the Eastern Fleet) to replace Morgan Mattin after his retirement. Generally considered to have been an effective captain, although a scandal later in her captaincy involving secret negotiations with the Omban consulship led to her being recalled by a majority of the band captains in 1142.
3 Eleven-Fingered Kwala Southwestern Fleet 1142-1145 (3 years) Third High Captain, elected by the band captains to replace Shelley Shell Shellwright after her recall. Generally considered to be the worst of the High Captains, and his animosity towards Kiyoran Sam and refusal to work with the other Grand Captains resulted in his recall in 1145.

Opeli Crewsdaughter (1159-1162)

1145-1162 (17 years) Fourth High Captain, elected by the band captains to replace Eleven-Fingered Kwala after his recall. Eshki established the Azhasavvan embassies in Gash, Cairnstone, and Niutera and more broadly expanded the recognition of the Confederacy as a legitimate state, but the crowning achievement of her captaincy is generally considered to be her handling of the death of the universally popular Kiyoran Sam, as well as her expansion of the rights of free ports in conjunction with Opeli Crewsdaughter. Queen Eshki died of an infected arrow wound sustained against Sinmarans in 1162.
5 Doreos Yi Eastern Fleet Opeli Crewsdaughter (1162-1163)

Chom of Hoskaport (1167-1169)

Known archonic avatars

[edit]
Avatar Manifestation of Type Description
King of Swords (Daiangamia) Azua Bestial Formerly a cat. A vaguely feline creature comprised entirely of cutting, bleeding blades and ribbons of flesh, whose mere touch poisons and rends.
LEGION Kana Humanoid An entity which manifests as a flickering, crowdlike apparition of multiple figures, each reflections or shadows of its victim. In later stages of its haunting, LEGION grows to a great size and invites the victim to join it, at which point they become yet another reflection.
Morgan Kittiwake Mezira Humanoid Formerly human. Appears as a middle-aged Pashaini man with notably missing body parts and a too-wide mouth. Possesses the ability to grow extra limbs, digest inorganic substances such as steel, and breathe underwater.
Skin Tailor Naxa Bestial Formerly human. At some point was transformed into a half-animal monster, and now spends its time sewing the flayed skins of its victims onto its own body, trying to turn itself back into a human again but only succeeding in further warping and twisting its body.
Starvelings Mezira Incorporeal "Lesser aspects" of Mezira that can infect living things, including humans and animals. Their hosts develop an insatiable hunger that no amount of consumption can resolve, all while the starveling draws that which they consume into Mezira; most starveling hosts eventually autocannibalize themselves.
Sun Eyes Kana Humanoid Formerly a human. Its visions of Kana led it to attack and nearly kill the god Ennukan, stealing his eye and forcing it into its own head; the burning eye melted its original eyes and face and gave it functional omniscience, at the cost of its own mind. Now spends most of its time hunting down Ennukan to finish what it started.
Tomei Baran Humanoid Formerly human.
Void Presence Sheoshuma Incorporeal A mental presence that hijacks the minds of its victims and seeks to drain the life from those it haunts. Can manifest as a cloud of freezing, pitch-black liquid or ice.

Known characters from the Tareverse

Character Pronouns Time Description Notes
Aglar Dragonsbane He/him Unknown "a legendary dark elf king who killed a dragon that was terrorizing Deadpath and is often conflated or confused with Arajorn XIV" Of dubious canonicity.
Aonei (of the Green Horde) She/her Unclear (see notes) Became ruler of the Green Horde and unified the Aone for the first time. Youngest daughter of mythical Blackhair and Tveijin and half-sister of Magollo(n), served as Magollo(n)'s chief advisor and governor and was rewarded with lands after his death. Had three daughters and two sons, who supposedly invented magic, Contributionalism, steelworking, musk ox domestication, and reindeer domestication and founded the "Snowsingers, Plains Aune, Highland Aune, Lake Aune, and Calennan Aune", as well as five sisters who supposedly established "the Volbarasian Empire, the Tularshean Vayanuri, the Ombari, the West Coast Vayanuri, and the now-extinct pre-Snowsinger tundra peoples who survive in the wandering Thulosi clans of Auklos". Also spelled "Aunei". Heavily mythologized. Sources listed for birth and foundation of Aon'e/Aun'e Confederation include 314 and 332 AT (1835 and 1800 BP in old calendar), 452 and 470 AT (905 and 940 AT in old calendar), and "late 300s-early 400s". "West Coast Vayanuri" seems to refer to proto-Sinmarans. Definitely canon in some form.
Bolus He/him Unclear; post-Oufeng? The principality of Boluza, in the COTFR, is named after him. Possibly an Oufeng general? Very little known about him. His name translates to "the scarred one".
Tushuo Catcher He/him Sometime between 1182 and 1233 AT Pashaini Deep Faith captain of the whaler Queen of Heisa whose leg was torn off by a sperm whale. He later died of blood loss, and his flesh was served to the crew of the ship and consumed by Morgan Kittiwake, trapping his soul in Mezira. See "Seafood Diet".
Chiro He/him Joined cult in 542 AT, fled expulsion from Tanoa in 561 AT Acolyte of Scero and Tarna and early Sekeronite who opposed Serina and favored keeping the religion a mystery cult. Schismed after Tarna's death and migrated to Sinmara and/or Mirasara after the Sekeronites were expelled. Has a book named for and authored by him in the Kindly Verses, the Book of Chiro. Mystery sects of Sekeronism are called "Chiroite" after him. Definitively canon.

Irikan dema Kithosen He/him 1232 AT Subut of Khol'aone and uncle of the dema Omakurans (via his brother Omakuran) who accepted a bribe from Plague fey to kill as many mages as possible and is affiliated with the Imperialist faction of Kataxa. Exiled the dema Omakurans in the first place, tries to kill them, and was rejected by Nauha in favor of Omakuran (also may have killed Omakuran). Also tries to conquer/unify "the entire plateau", which involves slaughtering a monastery, enslaving monastics and foreigners to forge weapons and replace fleeing monastics respectively, and invading Omba. Eventually assassinated by "Serin", Anceh, and Khurven's ghost. Also spelled "Aerikan". Relies heavily on the oldest version of the dema Omakurans and is thus largely non-canon.
Morgan Kittiwake He/him Destroyed 1233 AT, at least eighty years old Avatar of Mezira known for his cannibalistic tendencies, which may extend to autocannibalism. Apparently possesses the ability to grow at least three arms and "far too many teeth", and doesn't have to breathe. Claims to be Mezira's chosen prophet upon the earth and inflicts the starveling curse on victims, including Ms. Shoal and Talorai dema Omakuran. Destroyed by Kalimi Ar-Huanga and Vehsi Tuomeiomi after trying to hijack the latter's Azuic rift to incarnate his patron; presumably reabsorbed into Mezira. See "Seafood Diet" and Metempsychosis. It's not clear whether "Morgan Kittiwake" is his real name or an alias, as he mentions having had other names at one point.
Mangiri the Holy She/her Unknown (predates Sekeronism, "Sightedism", and possibly Tuism) "a leader of a religious movement that influenced the Sighted, Ombari Dystheist, and God-Empress cults and one of the most powerful dark elf sorceresses ever to have lived" Appears to be inspired by Manupataq. Of dubious canonicity.
Ynserthnei M'Hir They/them Thousands, if not tens of thousands, of years before Suishui Tu Elvish wizard who noticed Oblivial portals forming in the edges of the Deadpath Anomaly and recorded their findings in an eponymous codex. Basis of who would eventually become Neserthne M'Hira. Non-canon.

Pumanei of Nisskhot She/her 282 AT (565 in old calendar) "first espoused Elevationism, marking the first and oldest of the major alatrist philosophies" Of dubious canonicity.

Also translated, compiled, and commented on the writings of Neserthne M'Hira in the Codex M'Hiri, assisted by five other scholars. Also spelled "Seykiri"; her name means "Record of Spirits". Definitively canon.
Satsu the Eternally Sarcastic He/him Unknown (contemporary with Ateyo and Bledu) "a renowned (dark elf) general, military strategist, and advisor of Ateyo and Bledu Antarys known for his many impressive military victories" Appears to be inspired by Subutai. Probably canon in some form.
Serin He/him 1232 AT Omban Shezonite and part of the embassy to Kataxa. Also called "Terin", "Tejin", and "Tulin". Very early prototype of Tulin Harkener. Non-canon.
Serina She/her Joined cult in 548 AT, exposed cult in 558 AT, died 578 AT Acolyte of Tarna and early Sekeronite who opposed Chiro and transformed the religion from a mystery religion into an evangelist one. Leader of the church during the migration to Upper Omba/Kautiri, and posthumous first archseisut. Has two books in the Kindly Verses named for and authored by her, the First and Second Books of Serina. Evangelist Sekeronite sects are called "Serinite" after her. Definitively canon.
Ms. Shoal She/her Sometime between 1182 and 1233 AT Pashaini sailor and fisher who encountered Morgan Kittiwake multiple times, of which the final time she attempted to kill him. He in turn infected her with a starveling, and she survived for at least the next six months with her mental faculties intact enough to tell her tale to a Scholomantic mage, killing and eating said mage's servant in the process. Most likely dead, degenerated, and/or trapped in Mezira. See "Seafood Diet". First name unknown.
Shusarei She/her 480 AT (960 in old calendar) "daughter of Aunei" who, "influenced by Elevationism and Shezonism, established the philosophy of Deicidism" Of dubious canonicity.
Tarna She/her Started Sekeronism in 536 AT, took over as leader in 543, died in 558 "Friend" of Scero's who manipulated him into starting Sekeronism, mostly for the money. Probably poisoned Scero and later died in a drunken duel. Never truly believed in the religion, unlike her acolytes Chiro and Serina. Definitively canon.
Teloh of Pera He/him 354-426 AT Tanoan philosopher, arcanist, and theologian who applied moral principles to the Duality, differentiated between in absentia and in oppositia dualism, formulated Teloh's law (the mirror principle) and the mirror model of magic, attempted to classify the elements dualistically, wrote On the Duality of the Universe and its Manifestations of the Two Godhoods (which contains all of the above), and was a trans icon. Also called "Teleodoreos". Definitively canon.
