Stephan Francis De Borhegyi (17 October 1921 — 26 September 1969) was a Hungarian American archaeologist and museologist.[1] He studied Mesoamerican archaeology and was the director of the Milwaukee Public Museum.[2]
Early life
[edit]Borhegyi was born in Budapest in 1921.[1][3] He attended St. Joseph Calasanz college preparatory school in Debrecen.[1][3] In 1938 he started attending Peter Pazmany University in Budapest.[1][3] World War II caused a break in his studies, as in 1942 he joined the mounted artillery of the Royal Hungarian Army as a first lieutenant.[1] In 1944 when the Horthy government fell, Borhegyi joined the Hungarian underground.[1] After the war he returned to school and earned his PhD summa cum laude in 1946.[1][3]
He began working in the Near Eastern and classical archaeology section of the Hungarian National Museum as an assistant.[1][3] Simultaneously he started teaching at his alma mater in the department of Archaeology and Anthropology.[1][3]
