Appearance
The methylbenzenes are derivatives of benzene with a methyl groups (alkylbenzenes) replacing one or more of the hydrogen atoms.
Monomethylbenzenes
[edit]The only monomethylbenzene is toluene.
-
Monomethylbenzene (toluene)
Dimethylbenzenes
[edit]There are three dimethylbenzenes, known as the xylenes. They are systematically named as o-xylene (ortho), m-xylene (meta) and p-xylene. (para)
-
1,2-dimethylbenzene (o-xylene)
-
1,3-dimethylbenzene (m-xylene)
-
1,4-dimethylbenzene (p-xylene)
Trimethylbenzenes
[edit]There are three trimethylbenzenes; known respectively as hemellitene, pseudocumene and mesitylene.
-
1,2,3-trimethylbenzene (vic-trimethylbenzene)
-
1,2,4-trimethylbenzene (asym-trimethylbenzene)
-
1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (sym-trimethylbenzene)
Tetramethylbenzenes
[edit]There are three tetramethylbenzenes; known respectively as prehnitene, isodurene and durene.
-
1,2,3,4-tetramethylbenzene (o-tetramethylbenzene)
-
1,3,4,5-tetramethylbenzene (m-tetramethylbenzene)
-
1,2,4,5-tetramethylbenzene (p-tetramethylbenzene)
Pentamethylbenzenes
[edit]The only pentamethylbenzene is pentamethylbenzene.
-
Pentamethylbenzene
Hexamethylbenzenes
[edit]There is only one hexamethylbenzene.
