Article Evaluation - German Colonization of Africa.

For the article evaluation I will be looking at the page "German Colonization of Africa."

- Confused by the introduction, could be reformatted to make it more understandable. The article states that, "The German Colonization of Africa took place during two distinct periods." but there is no reference to when these periods are. This may be caused by how short that actual article is.

- The article mainly references other wikipedia articles. There are no outside references. This article is seemingly neutral but there is so little information that it is hard to understand how this article may fit within the broader context regarding German colonization of Africa. All the information seems to be the product of another wikipedia articles that are being referenced.

- There is vague information about who was in Africa that represented Germany but not why or what they were specifically doing that could be further developed and expanded into its own section.

- Information is not out of date but there is no focus on the impact of German colonization in Africa today. This article strictly takes a historical perspective on the topic.

- The talk page has no additions.

- The article labeled as a low-importance stub attached to the Colonialism Wikiproject . There are also subsections to these projects that focus on certain country's colonialist efforts but Germany is not one on its own.

- This article differs from what is seen in class because of its goal to summarize something that happened historically. Though I should point out this article could benefit from formatting and headings in order to structure it beyond a simple historical overview.

Assignment: Add to an Article - Mau Mau Uprising

This will be a section for my notes on this assignment.

- I found it troubling to start the assignment looking to add to an article. This lead me to investigate the "citation Hunt" tool that allowed me to preview some areas in articles that were uncited. At first I found it hard to determine the evidence behind many places that needed citations. After doing some research and narrowing down my topic to something that I felt was related to the course material, that assignment felt much easier. First by learning some of the basics of what provoked the Mau Mau Uprising and how it really flowed with many of the topics in the course.

- Having looked at the Talk page there was very little in regards to this section, Political and Social concession by the British. It is hard to find information because this uprising does continue over a long period of time and is easily mixed up with more current actions of the nation.

- Having added the citations that were needed, I was unable to remove the 'citations needed' within the article.

- The citation added to the article Mau Mau Uprising was, Land Tenure Reform in East Africa: Good, Bad or Unimportant?

Assignment: Choose Possible Topics

Kenya Colony

The Kenya Colony article would be an important topic to investigate further due to the quality of the article. This article is limited to what amounts to a brief overview of a very complex history of colonialism constituted by the British empire. The quality of the article was determined by the simplistic ‘summary’ view of the entire 40+ year history as well as the amount of citations that I believe are needed to expand upon this. I think this is a good fit for our course of colonialism because it represents what areas go through during the colonialist period as well as postcolonial implementations of culture and social cohesion. Having gone through the talk page there is a question on British Atrocities that have not been answered or represented in the article that would be good to investigate further to make the article more reflective of the colonial and postcolonial attitudes of the colony and the culture.  

German Colonization of Africa

The article on German Colonization of Africa is more of a compilation of many other articles. This article has no citations, only other wikilinks that I find quite circular. This think this article could use expanding, into the social history of Germany entering Africa for colonial purposes. Specifically, what would be interesting is a ‘afterward’ of this period of German colonization which would be predominantly related to the course material of post colonialism attitudes and culture. The talk page has no contributions but is a part of the wikiProject on colonialism. This is a stub level article which I believe would benefit from expansion and development in the areas of the ‘aftermath’, and would also benefit from a varied source pool

Illustrating An Article

The picture I found was from the USAID in Africa user on Flickr. I added this picture to 8-4-4 Curriculum in Kenya which was lacking in detail for a wikipedia article but this picture fit within the wikipedia ecosystem and I felt it was a solid contribution. I found it hard to find a proper picture as my submissions were consistently turned down. Many of my photos were unable to be uploaded and I found myself simply changing aspects like the name in order to get it uploaded. I place the picture on the right hand side on both this sandbox page, as well as the actual page because I felt it added to the article rather than spoke for the article, unlike a picture or a map or something that provides context.

Finalized Topic - The Culbertson Tract

This is a topic that is not covered on wikipedia. I feel its a good fit within the wikipedia ecosystem as there are many articles surrounding this topic that I feel this article could benefit from being apart of. In relation to the topic of colonialism this land claim is directly in regards to settler colonial implications in the Hastings area. There is a decent amount of information regarding this land claim. There are various sources, from the land claim itself to other articles on the implications of this land claim.

First Draft - The Culbertson Tract Land Claim

Right of the green space. The Culbertson Tract Land Claim covers the south of the Tyendinaga area and the majority of the Deseronto Township.

Outline

The first part of the article will out line what the Culbertson track is and where it is located. There will be a picture of the location in hastings county. The land in dispute is very large and picture will provide context in where and how much land is in dispute.

The Culbertson Tract is a large area located in the present hastings country. Historically this land is hard to define because there is no set area until hastings county was created. This is a land claim by the Mohawk of the Bay Quinte First Nation in 1995. This claim regards to dispute of the land claim made in 1837 that displaced over 827 acres. The land is located with the Hastings Country  The claim was made to Indian and Northern Affairs in 2007 and much of the land has been transferred back the the Mohawk of the Bay Quinte First Nation.

In 2007 there were various protests surrounding the Land claim and is something that could have its own area of discussion within the article. This is important because the Mohawk of the Bay Quinte First Nation is one of the most active political first nations groups because of its size and ability to create awareness. I feel this ties in with settler colonialism discussion we had in class and I can hopefully add that in.
